Job Purpose:
Lead and maintain effective health, safety and wellbeing arrangements across the UK business, ensuring legal compliance and corporate standards while promoting a positive, practical safety culture. You will provide professional advice, oversight and assurance across workplace operations, maintenance, projects and organisational change.
Key Responsibilities:
· Deliver the annual health and safety improvement plan and maintain policies, standards and procedures aligned with HSG65 and ISO 45001 principles.
· Provide practical advice to senior leaders, managers, colleagues and project teams, escalating complex or specialist matters where appropriate.
· Monitor legislative and regulatory developments, assess business impact and coordinate required updates.
· Plan and complete workplace inspections, risk assessments, compliance reviews and internal audits across UK offices.
· Maintain legal registers, statutory records, action trackers and clear management information; prepare concise monthly and quarterly reports on compliance, incidents, trends, training and corrective actions.
· Manage accident, near-miss and hazard reporting, lead proportionate investigations and ensure corrective and preventative actions are completed.
· Oversee RIDDOR reporting and liaison with the HSE, local authorities and fire and rescue services when required.
· Lead fire safety arrangements, including fire risk assessments, emergency procedures, evacuation exercises, PEEPs and fire marshal programmes, aligned with landlords’ building-wide strategies.
· Verify and retain evidence of statutory building compliance, including water hygiene, asbestos, fixed electrical installations, lifts, gas safety and ventilation.
· Support emergency response, critical incident arrangements and workplace-related business continuity planning.
· Manage contractor safety, including review of risk assessments, method statements, permits to work and supplier assurance.
· Provide health and safety support for maintenance, office moves, refurbishments, fit-outs, acquisitions and lease-related projects.
· Lead DSE and ergonomic assessment arrangements for office, hybrid and home-based colleagues, including higher-risk escalations.
· Coordinate specific risk assessments with HR and managers, including new and expectant mothers, young persons, lone working and work-related stress.
· Oversee first-aid needs, safety communications, awareness campaigns and mandatory compliance training.
· Coach managers, local coordinators, fire marshals and first aiders, and build effective relationships with landlords, insurers, occupational health advisers, consultants and service partners.
· Identify opportunities to simplify processes, strengthen assurance and improve colleague engagement with health, safety and wellbeing.
Skills and Experience Specification:
Essential:
· NEBOSH National General Certificate or equivalent Level 3 health and safety qualification.
· Working towards, or committed to completing, the NEBOSH National Diploma or equivalent Level 6 qualification.
· Technical Membership of IOSH (TechIOSH), with commitment to progress to Certified and Chartered membership.
· Proven health and safety advisory experience, ideally within an office, property or facilities management environment.
· Strong working knowledge of UK health and safety and fire safety legislation, Approved Codes of Practice, HSE guidance and practical risk management.
· Experience of audits, inspections, incident investigations, corrective-action management, contractor safety and workplace projects.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and presenting to senior stakeholders.
· Ability to influence constructively, prioritise competing requirements and apply proportionate, practical judgement.
· Confidence using Microsoft Office and health and safety reporting or compliance systems.
Desirable:
· Experience within insurance, financial services, professional services or another corporate office environment.
· A fire safety qualification or practical experience managing fire safety arrangements.
· Business continuity, emergency planning, workplace wellbeing, environmental or sustainability experience.
· Experience supporting multi-site or international workplace operations.
· Experience implementing or auditing management systems to ISO 45001.
