We have a remote career opportunity for an enthusiastic, self-reliant Claims Specialist handling international commercial casualty claims. As a member of the International U.S. Casualty Claims team, this position is responsible for all facets of handling certain North American claims under U.S. and non-U.S. policies of significant complexity and exposure.
The role involves working with a range of European and North American insured clients. HDI has a large portfolio of industrial casualty risks produced internationally with claims exposure in North America, typically involving a significant proportion of product liability losses.
Key Responsibilities
- Investigate, evaluate, negotiate, and resolve complex commercial casualty claims, utilizing external service providers as appropriate.
- Manage complex claims involving significant exposure, including product liability and cross-border matters.
- Participate in or lead litigation teams and independently resolve significant exposure claims on favorable terms.
- Manage outside counsel and other external service providers, including oversight of costs and work product.
- Analyze policy coverage across standard and manuscript forms, identify coverage issues, and prepare written coverage positions when appropriate.
- Operate within designated monetary authority for reserving, case disposition, and payments.
- Prepare timely and accurate large-loss reports and keep management informed of key developments on severe claims.
- Participate in mediations and informal claim negotiations.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, brokers, co-insurers, and colleagues domestically and internationally.
- Prepare reinsurance loss reports and identify potential subrogation recovery opportunities.
- Present internally on relevant U.S. legal topics and share claims lessons learned across departments.
- Collaborate with underwriting and other departments to improve overall results.
- Participate in industry groups, professional societies, and specialized internal working groups focused on emerging risks, coverage, and major claim evaluations.
- Travel as necessary for mediations, client and case meetings, and court or arbitral appearances.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree required.
- 10+ years of casualty claims experience and/or commensurate experience in private legal practice.
- Litigation and cross-border insurance claims management experience, with an emphasis on product liability.
- Strong contract and policy interpretation skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to build consensus among diverse international stakeholders.
- Strong negotiation skills and confidence working directly with client risk managers, executives, and outside counsel.
- Strong customer service, relationship-building, organizational, and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and effectively in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with international business partners.
- Professional demeanor and ability to adapt to change and value diverse perspectives.
- Extensive experience with Microsoft Office.
- Ability to obtain and maintain required state insurance adjuster licenses.
- Ability to travel as necessary, up to approximately 10%.
- Cross-border claims experience involving international partners preferred.
- European language skills, particularly German, and other cross-cultural experience preferred.
- CPCU, AIC, and/or AIC-M designation preferred.
Compensation and Benefits:
Base salary range for this position is $185,000 – $215,000, plus eligibility for a performance-based annual bonus. Actual compensation will be based on a variety of factors including experience, education, and location.
