Independent Election Committee
Expression of Interest
Purpose
ICM is committed to a fair, transparent and clearly documented process for ICM Board appointments, giving special consideration to ensuring effective Board succession planning in order to maintain a balanced range of skills. To support this goal, the ICM Council agreed in 2022 to establish an Independent Election Committee (IEC) to oversee and lead the appointment process, ensuring smooth transitions and continuity of Board leadership.
Since 2023, the IEC has led this appointment process, assisting the Council in fulfilling its governance reponsibilities for Board appointments. The IEC is independent of the Board, but it reports to the Board Governance Committee as needed to fulfil its role. The attached Terms of Reference outline the IEC’s scope of work, roles, responsibilities, terms of appointment, procedures and available resources. Participation in the IEC is voluntary but includes reimbursement for agreed expenses.
Call for expression of interest in becoming an iec member
The IEC currently has two vacant positions and invites expressions of interest from individuals who wish to join the three existing members of this committee. Individuals from the ICM Southeast Asia and Western Pacific regions are especially encouraged to apply.
Key details about IEC membership are as follows:
-
Composition: The IEC is comprised of four members and a Chair, who are selected based on their skills to perform the requirements of the role.
-
Eligibility: All members must be current members of a full ICM Member Association (MA) and meet all the essential criteria. IEC members will be appointed by the ICM Board Governance Committee, to which the IEC will report.
-
Term length: Appointments are up to six years, with the option for a one-year extension to allow for efficient and smooth transition for new members.
-
Time commitment: Members are expected to commit on average three hours per month to the work of the committee. During the election period the time commitment may increase to an average of 15 hours per month.
-
Compensation: Participation in the IEC is on voluntary basis; however, reimbursement will be provided for agreed expenses.
-
Location: IEC members will primarily work remotely from their home country, enabling participation regardless of location. However, applicants are expected to travel to The Hague once every three years for a three-days in-person meeting. All necessary travel expenses for this meeting will be covered by ICM in line with ICM’s policies.
