Job Description
This is a remote position.
F02 Independent Management Consultant
Build your independent consulting practice
You may already advise your own clients, contribute specialist expertise to a consulting firm’s projects, or be preparing to establish an independent practice. Rutherford International invites you to express interest in the Rutherford Talent Clearinghouse™: a curated professional directory supporting the visibility, positioning and development of qualified independent consultants and fractional executives.
This is an Evergreen expression of interest, not an advertised vacancy or a specific consulting assignment. Professionals in North America and the United Kingdom may register for consideration.
The contribution we are looking for
We welcome professionals who help organisations understand material business problems, assess their options and make informed decisions. Your contribution may include diagnosis, recommendations, implementation support or knowledge transfer, depending on the agreed mandate.
Some consultants originate and lead complete engagements. Others contribute specialist expertise within a consulting firm’s delivery team. Both are relevant; C-suite experience and an established independent client base are not universal requirements.
Your expertise may include:
- Strategy and business models.
- Finance and performance improvement.
- Operations, productivity and supply chain.
- Organisation, leadership, talent and succession.
- Commercial growth, pricing and sales effectiveness.
- Transformation and change.
- Mergers and acquisitions analysis.
- IPO readiness and investor materials.
- Property acquisition analytics.
- Digital transformation.
- AI workflow integration within a management-advisory mandate.
Growth, succession, turnaround and restructuring are possible operating contexts. Turnaround experience is not required. Sector experience is considered separately from consulting capability.
Position your expertise through a Rutherford Consultant Thesis™
Your résumé records your experience. Your Rutherford Consultant Thesis™ explains the problems you are equipped to address, the environments in which you contribute most effectively, and the evidence supporting your offer.
For independent consulting, it also helps clarify your proposed scope, deliverables, client dependencies and measures of success. Thesis assistance is included in directory membership. It is developed during preparation and activation, rather than required with your initial expression of interest.
How engagement opportunities arise
The Clearinghouse model supports client-posted project requirements, curator-led shortlists and direct enquiries about suitable consultants. Contracting clients may be organisations purchasing advice directly or consulting firms seeking additional specialist capability.
Each engagement requires agreement on scope, deliverables, responsibilities, fees and terms. Advisory work does not confer executive authority; any delegated authority must be expressly agreed. A fractional executive mandate is considered separately under the relevant functional qualification.
Assessment and membership journey
Initial registration is free and carries no payment obligation. Following initial review, you may be invited to complete the RutherfordINTEL Assessment™ and preparation stage.
Curators consider assessed consulting potential alongside your specialist expertise, professional evidence, contextual suitability and availability. Assessment payment or completion does not itself confer membership. Admission and active representation depend on curator approval.
The journey is: expression of interest → initial review → assessment and preparation → curator review → membership decision → thesis development and activation for accepted members.
Membership and fees
All amounts below are in USD.
- Initial expression of interest: free, with no payment obligation.
- Assessment and preparation: $250, including your behavioural profile, leadership style, Management Consulting benchmark, career-focus benchmark and feedback.
- Directory membership for accepted members: $125 per month on a 12-month term. This includes Consultant Thesis assistance, talent promotion, lead generation support, access to sector research and the online community, and career and project success advisory support.
- Engagement facilitation: paid by the contracting client, with the consultant’s oversight of the amount and calculation.
- Back-office support: charged separately on a cost-plus basis where used. Dispute mediation is provided.
Rutherford does not charge a percentage of your consulting billings.
Conversion to full-time employment
If a consulting assignment converts to full-time employment with the contracting client, the contracting client pays Rutherford International a placement fee calculated on the consultant’s annual salary and bonus income:
- Conversion before six months from the assignment start date: 25%.
- Conversion from six months up to one year from the assignment start date: 20%.
The placement fee is payable by the contracting client, not the consultant. Onboarding support is available if requested.
Rutherford International retains agency rights for 12 months after the consulting assignment ends.
Membership provides professional support and market participation; it does not guarantee assignments, introductions, procurement access or income. Applicable fees and service terms will be provided before commitment.
Express your interest
Submit your résumé and identify your principal business function and sector interests. You do not need a completed Consultant Thesis or a current project proposal to register.

Requirements
Requirements
We consider the substance of your expertise and contribution rather than applying a fixed number of years of experience.
You should be able to demonstrate:
- Relevant expertise in one or more management-consulting specialisms.
- Evidence of diagnosing organisational problems, developing useful recommendations or supporting agreed implementation.
- Clear written and verbal communication, practical judgement and constructive stakeholder engagement.
- An ability to define scope, deliverables, exclusions and client responsibilities.
- Professional discretion and respect for client confidentiality.
- A clear account of your own contribution to results, supported by appropriate work examples or references where available.
- Any qualifications or authorisations required for the particular services you offer.
- Willingness to participate in Rutherford’s assessment and curator review before consideration for membership and active representation.
For work within a consulting firm’s team, relevant evidence may include specialist workstream delivery, collaboration within the firm’s methods and the ability to meet its stated project requirements.
Availability, preferred engagement format and suitable operating contexts are explored during curation. Your assessment results and proprietary benchmark scores are not published in the public directory.
