Role description:

The Director of Indirect Procurement provides enterprise leadership for the indirect spend portfolio, establishing the operating model, governance, talent, and commercial agenda needed to improve value creation across the organization. This leader partners with senior stakeholders in operations, finance, engineering, maintenance, information technology, human resources, and other functions to translate business priorities into a coordinated procurement roadmap. The role is accountable for portfolio-level performance, organizational capability, supplier resilience, policy stewardship, and the long-term effectiveness of the indirect procurement function.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and lead the enterprise indirect procurement strategy, operating plan, priorities, and multi-year category roadmaps aligned with business objectives, capital plans, operational requirements, and financial targets.
  • Lead, coach, and develop the indirect procurement team; establish clear accountabilities, performance expectations, succession plans, and professional development priorities.
  • Partner with Engineering, Operations, Plant Leadership, EHS, Legal, Finance, HR, IT, and Group Procurement to shape demand, define requirements, prioritize sourcing activity, and support effective implementation.
  • Establish category strategies that aggregate demand across plants, reduce fragmented and local buying, leverage enterprise scale, strengthen competition, and provide appropriate sourcing channels for recurring and urgent business needs.
  • Oversee major sourcing events and negotiations, ensuring clear scopes, competitive commercial structures, appropriate payment terms, service levels, warranties, performance guarantees, change-order controls, insurance, indemnification, liability, cybersecurity, and risk allocation.
  • Provide commercial governance throughout the project and contract lifecycle, including business-case validation, bid leveling, total-cost analysis, award recommendations, contract approval, supplier onboarding, change management, claims support, closeout, and lessons learned.
  • Deliver measurable business value through savings, cost avoidance, demand management, specification optimization, supplier consolidation, productivity, working-capital improvement, and stronger commercial terms.
  • Establish and maintain a robust pipeline, forecasts, contracts, savings documentation, performance metrics, and executive reporting that provide visibility to Procurement, Operations, Engineering, and Finance leadership.
  • Lead strategic supplier relationship management through business reviews, scorecards, improvement plans, innovation, capacity planning, risk mitigation, issue resolution, and continuous-improvement activity.
  • Monitor supplier markets, labor availability, commodity and wage drivers, capacity constraints, regulatory developments, business continuity risks, and emerging technologies; develop mitigation and alternate-source strategies.
  • Strengthen indirect procurement governance, including sourcing thresholds, competitive-bid requirements, templates, contract standards, delegated authority, purchase-order discipline, supplier due diligence, third-party risk management, and compliance.
  • Act as the senior Procurement escalation point for critical supplier issues, commercial disputes, contractor performance, service continuity, claims, and urgent operational requirements.
  • Represent Procurement on cross-functional leadership teams and major initiatives, balancing cost, speed, technical requirements, operational continuity, quality, safety, sustainability, and enterprise risk.

Minimum skills / qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in supply chain, business, finance, engineering, operations, or a related field.
  • Ten (10) years of progressive procurement, strategic sourcing, supply chain, or commercial leadership experience, including substantial responsibility for indirect spend.
  • Five (5) years of people-leadership experience with accountability for developing managers and/or professional teams.
  • Demonstrated success leading cross-functional business initiatives in a complex, multi-site organization; manufacturing or asset-intensive experience is strongly relevant.
  • Experience influencing senior leaders and navigating decisions that involve competing financial, operational, risk, and service priorities.
  • Strong commercial acumen with experience in supplier governance, complex contracting environments, financial analysis, and enterprise risk considerations.
  • Ability to translate large and diverse spend portfolios into clear strategies, performance measures, and executive-level recommendations.
  • Working knowledge of enterprise procurement and ERP environments such as SAP, together with strong digital and analytical fluency.
  • Excellent written, verbal, negotiation, and executive presentation skills.
  • Ability to travel up to 15% based on business needs.

Preferred skills / qualifications:

  • Master's degree in business administration, supply chain, finance, engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Fifteen (15) years of progressive procurement or supply chain experience in manufacturing or another multi-site, asset-intensive environment.
  • Experience leading broad indirect portfolios such as MRO, facilities, logistics, professional services, capital-related services, information technology, or other enterprise services.
  • Experience with procurement transformation, source-to-pay modernization, spend analytics, or procurement operating model redesign.
  • Professional certification such as CPSM (Institute for Supply Management) or CSCP (ASCM).
