GHD is a global professional services company that leads through engineering, architecture, and construction expertise. We are an employee-owned company with over 12,000 diverse and skilled individuals, across more than 200 offices spanning five continents.
There’s no pledge more important than the one we make to look after our environment, and we’re committed to helping you do exactly that.
Take part in our efforts to ensure a sustainable future for our communities and the world in which we live.
Become part of our global network of skilled engineers, scientists, auditors, planners, and environmental specialists, all working together to leave this world better than we found it.
Join a world leader in professional services. We are committed to meeting the world’s biggest challenges affecting the water, energy, and urbanization sectors. Our global mine tailings and waste teams boast an impressive portfolio of opportunities and delivered projects. We’re looking for experienced geotechnical and mine tailings engineers. GHD has been highly recognized in Australia and throughout the world for its secure, profitable, practical, and innovative design, management, and supervision of tailing pond construction. From alumina to zinc, our team possesses extensive experience in treating metalliferous and non-metalliferous tailings.
Who are we looking for?
We’re looking to add an Intermediate 3D Designer – Dams and Tailings to our Canada East team. As a member of our global mine tailings and waste team, you would play an integral role in developing 3D designs and models for tailings dams and other tailings storage facility (TSF) infrastructure on operational and closed sites within GHD’s global mining community. The role also includes translating engineering concepts and design criteria into coordinated construction plans and detailed design documentation. Experience in the design and construction of tailings facilities, ideally within an environmental consulting context, is preferred.
In collaboration with an energetic and high-performing team, the selected candidate would focus on the 3D design and modelling of operating and closed tailings storage facilities, including tailings dams and related infrastructure, and on the production of construction plans through the following responsibilities:
Responsibilities:
- Develop coordinated 3D designs and models for tailings dams and other TSF infrastructure, including embankments, raises, decant systems, access roads, drainage works, surface-water management systems, and associated earthworks, in accordance with established design criteria and procedures.
- Prepare and refine grading surfaces, alignments, profiles, corridors, quantities, and other model outputs to support the planning, feasibility, detailed design, construction, and rehabilitation of tailings facilities and geotechnical infrastructure.
- Produce construction plans, drawings, sections, details, and design documentation directly from coordinated 3D models, ensuring consistency between modelled geometry, engineering requirements, and issued deliverables.
- Perform quality-control reviews of 3D models and construction plans to confirm compliance with technical specifications, design intent, drafting standards, applicable codes, and project requirements.
- Compile, interpret, and integrate survey, topographic, bathymetric, GIS, geotechnical, and existing-design data into reliable base models and design surfaces to support technical decisions and construction documentation.
- Collaborate with engineers and multidisciplinary project teams to evaluate design alternatives, resolve spatial conflicts, optimize constructability, and ensure that models, plans, and details meet quality standards and current industry practices.
What you will bring to the team:
Technical diploma in civil engineering or equivalent experience
- Minimum of 5 years of experience producing civil and geotechnical designs, 3D models, and construction plans, preferably for tailings dams, TSF infrastructure, mine-water management systems, or related mining and earthworks projects
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and 3D modelling and design software, particularly Civil 3D, with experience using tools such as Global Mapper, Muk3D, ArcGIS, or comparable platforms to develop TSF models and construction drawings
- Good communication skills and strong motivation to deliver collaborative projects
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in recruiting is just getting started and may be used during the process to improve efficiency and fairness. Your application may be reviewed by both AI and our hiring team. While AI supports some steps through the process, all final hiring decisions are made by humans
