Overview

We are currently seeking an Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to join AtkinsRéalis’ Geotechnical team. In this role, you will support a variety of projects for clients primarily within Alberta, with opportunities to work across Canada. The ideal candidate is an experienced professional with a strong understanding of soil mechanics, proven detailed design experience, excellent project execution and delivery skills, and a desire to further refine technical expertise. This position is based in Calgary, Alberta.

Candidates should demonstrate the willingness and adaptability to strengthen their technical expertise, build upon the existing portfolio of proposals, projects, and clients, work closely with senior team members to deliver projects successfully, and collaborate with a rapidly expanding, flexible, and forward-looking team working across a broad range of sectors.

Your role

  • Undertake geotechnical assessments, complex analyses, design calculations, and detailed designs using specialized software such as GeoStudio, Rocscience, and PLAXIS.
  • Contribute to the preparation of project proposals and cost estimates and participate in securing new business opportunities or expanding existing projects.
  • Support senior leadership with field evaluations, manage and contribute to geotechnical investigations, and perform design assessments and complex analytical calculations.
  • Review construction drawings and design reports to support construction activities and provide guidance and troubleshooting related to QA field testing and material performance, including soil, concrete, and asphalt.
  • Analyse and prepare recommendations and reports related to:
    • Foundation design.
    • Infrastructure projects.
    • Shoring and retaining walls.
    • Slope stability.
    • Ground improvement.
    • Settlement and deformation analysis.
    • Seismic and liquefaction assessments.
    • Road structure design.
    • Dikes and dams.
    • Materials testing.
    • Other geotechnical engineering projects.

About you

  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or Geology with a strong academic background and a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.
  • Registered as, or eligible for registration as, a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA.
  • Experience in project management, geotechnical investigations, design assessments, and complex analyses related to:
    • Shallow and deep foundations.
    • Shoring and retaining systems.
    • Settlement and deformation assessments.
    • Lateral response design.
    • Ground improvement design.
    • Seismic and liquefaction assessments.
  • Experience with limit equilibrium and numerical modelling techniques, including Finite Element and Boundary Element methods, and advanced proficiency with:
    • PLAXIS.
    • FLAC.
    • GeoStudio (Slope, Seep, Quake).
    • Rocscience applications.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills, organizational effectiveness, and strong team collaboration skills.
