This position offers you the opportunity to work in a project team environment with other engineers and designers involved in the detailed electrical design of high voltage substation and power projects.

The successful candidate will be working in the areas of substations, renewable energy, air & gas insulated substation engineering equipment at different voltage levels. The candidate should understand substation and power system protection schemes as they relate to the design of protection and control systems.

Key Responsibilities

You will work within a multidisciplinary team of design and engineering professionals to deliver substation protection and control projects. As an intermediate engineer, you will be responsible for supporting and executing the complete assigned P&C design tasks from planning through post-construction, with guidance and technical review from senior engineers.

You will apply your engineering knowledge and judgment to develop protection and control designs for substations and transmission facilities. Your work will include preparing drawings, calculations, relay settings, technical specifications, and construction packages, and supporting field investigations, testing, and commissioning. You will coordinate assigned work with other disciplines and clients, manage your deliverables against project schedules and budgets, and seek senior engineering guidance for complex protection applications and technical decisions.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Prepare P&C engineering drawings and calculations for substation and power system applications in accordance with client standards and applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements
  • Prepare technical reports that clearly communicate engineering concepts and meet client requirements
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, clients, vendors for project execution and resolution of technical issues
  • Provide regular progress updates on assigned deliverables and project milestones
  • Interface with team members and provide support and coordination to facilitate effective project execution
  • Perform self-checks and assigned peer checks within your areas of competence, address review comments, and support senior engineers in completing project QA/QC reviews

    • Cable schedule and sizing
    • Station service drawings and schematics
    • Control house layout
    • Bills of Material
  • Working knowledge of protection applications for transmission lines, transformers, buses, and breakers, including instrument transformer selection, breaker failure protection, and trip and close circuits. Ability to assist with protection philosophies, short-circuit and coordination studies, relay settings, and control logic under senior engineering guidance.
  • Preparation of P&C engineering design documentation, including technical specifications, equipment datasheets, basis of design and bills of material
  • Complete conceptual protection and control designs and layouts for new and existing substation facilities.
  • Identify technical issues, develop practical solutions, and escalate issues to the senior engineer.
  • Assist with proposal inputs, level-of-effort estimates, construction bid documents, technical bid evaluations, and equipment specifications for assigned P&C scope.
  • Provide construction and commissioning support, including coordination with clients, contractors, utilities, and equipment vendors
  • Experience with microprocessor-based protective relays and associated configuration software; familiarity with short-circuit and relay coordination software and CAD-based drawing workflows. Familiarity with SCADA interfaces, protection communications, and IEC 61850 applications is an asset.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or progress toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is preferred; PE licensure in a U.S or Peng in Canada jurisdiction is an asset.
  • 5-8 years of relevant substation protection and control engineering experience.

Office Location and Schedule

  • Typical office environment, working with computers and drawings for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to hazards including construction, weather, and industrial operations that may be experienced at the infrastructure facilities.
  • Stantec offers flexible work environment. While our preference is for the successful candidate to work from the office at least two days per week, we are open to discussing other work arrangements.
