You will join a multidisciplinary team working across Alberta on projects ranging from focused renovations and structural assessments to major facilities in the industrial, water, healthcare, education, community, and private sectors. The role provides opportunities to work alongside experienced technical leaders, build client relationships, and take on progressively greater design and project-delivery responsibility.

Your Opportunity

The successful candidate for this Intermediate Structural Engineer – Buildings position will provide technical expertise in structural building systems, contribute proactively to business development initiatives, and support the continued growth of our Structural Engineering practice within the Buildings Engineering team. You will have opportunities to take ownership of structural design packages, coordinate multidisciplinary work, interact directly with clients, and develop toward broader technical and project leadership responsibilities.

Our work spans projects of varied scale and complexity, including major research laboratories and healthcare facilities, water and wastewater treatment plants, advanced educational facilities, infrastructure projects, renovations, rehabilitation, commercial development, light industrial facilities, and structural assessments. You will contribute to new construction and rehabilitation projects involving concrete, steel, masonry, and wood systems while collaborating with architecture, mechanical, electrical, process, civil, and other engineering disciplines. Supported by senior technical leaders and the broader Stantec design community, you will have access to mentorship, diverse technical challenges, and opportunities to expand your design, coordination, and client-facing experience.

Your Key Responsibilities

• Liaise with owners, architects, engineering disciplines, and other project stakeholders to establish project objectives, communicate them to the project team, and support their successful delivery.
• Prepare and coordinate structural engineering designs from conceptual and detailed design through tender and construction.
• Prepare design calculations, technical specifications, and engineering drawings for concrete, steel, masonry and wood building structures.
• Apply professional seal to construction documents and engineering reports.
• Ensure Stantec’s Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) procedures are followed during project planning and execution.
• Assist Project Managers in developing project budgets, work plans, and schedules.
• Assist in coordinating project design activities and preparing engineering work schedules as part of an integrated multidisciplinary team.
• Coordinate design work with project team members, other disciplines, and Stantec offices, as appropriate to the project, and support construction administration activities.
• Contribute to the development of design tools, standards, specifications, and technical practices that support the Structural Engineering team.
• Provide construction-phase structural support through field reviews, shop drawing reviews, responses to requests for information, and collaboration with contractors and project team members to assess general conformance with the design documents and resolve technical issues.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from a recognized university. A master’s degree is considered an asset.
• Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation, or eligible to obtain P.Eng. designation within one year.
• 4+ years of post-graduation experience in buildings and/or water projects structural design. You possess a thorough understanding of building structures design and project delivery types.
• Experience in the water, commercial, education, and healthcare sectors is considered an asset.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and structural finite element design software such as ETABS, SAP2000, SAFE, RISA, and RAM. Experience with Revit and Bluebeam is highly desirable.
• Strong working knowledge and demonstrated design experience in concrete, masonry, and structural steel, with proficiency in applying the NBCC and relevant CSA design standards, including CSA A23.3, CSA S304, and CSA S16. Experience in wood design is considered an asset.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Interest and ability in contributing to the development of standards, specifications, and technical resources for the structural group.
• Highly organized, with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and take a flexible approach to work assignments.
• Demonstrated ability to adapt to changes in technology and to integrate new technologies into daily work processes.
