With an IoT platform connecting more millions of devices, and growing - Trackunit is building the connectivity layer underneath the construction industry. Every one of those units carries a cellular radio, and every one of those radios sits inside a web of standards, type approvals, and patent licences that decides whether we can ship and where we can ship.

You will join our IoT Division, Device Reliability Engineering (DRE) team as an expert on IoT certifications, standards, and licensing including Standard Essential Patents (SEP). This position shapes both our exposure and our coverage arguments, and it means this role works in every direction at once, with suppliers, regulatory approvals, legal advisors, product and engineering, and with customers.

This is a role for someone who can hold a genuinely complex domain in their head and then explain it in three sentences to a customer who has never heard the phrase “patent exhaustion.”

Experience level: a deep specialist role. We expect solid, hands-on experience with cellular device approvals and licensing — likely 10+ years across regulatory, certification, or IP/licensing work in mobile, IoT, or telecom hardware. This is a senior individual contributor position with no direct reports, high autonomy, and direct executive visibility.

What you'll do

Your work splits roughly into four parts: licensing, approvals, guidance, and governance.

• Own our SEP position. Understand where our cellular SEP exposure actually sits across our device portfolio, track the relevant patent pools and licensing programmes, and maintain a clear, evidence-based view of what is covered through our supply chain and what is not.

• Run supplier licensing due diligence. Establish and maintain a consistent set of asks across module suppliers — coverage confirmation, standards and generations covered, and honest disclosure of known gaps — so responses can be compared side by side and fed into supplier qualification.

• Support licensing negotiations and claims. Work alongside our General Counsel, external patent counsel, and economic advisors on royalty basis questions, valuation and apportionment arguments, and claims that reach us through our OEM customers. You bring the technical and supply chain substance; they bring the legal strategy.

• Own global type approvals and certification. Plan and steer RED/CE, FCC, ISED, UKCA, and the wider set of regional approvals, plus GCF/PTCRB and carrier certification, across a multi-region device portfolio. Keep certification on the critical path of new product programmes rather than at the end of them.

• Stay ahead of regulatory change. Cyber Resilience Act, RED delegated acts, radio spectrum and network sunsets, environmental and product compliance requirements — know what is coming, when it bites, and what it means for our roadmap.

• Make the complex simple, and guide without over-promising. Write and maintain the internal playbooks, customer-facing explainers, and OEM guidance that turn this domain into something a commercial colleague or a customer can act on. Be the person Sales, Legal, and customers come to when a licensing notification lands, explaining the landscape accurately, saying clearly where the limits of our position are, and pointing customers to independent specialist advice where that is the right answer.

• Build the governance. Response protocols, decision records, escalation paths, and embedding licensing and compliance requirements into how we qualify suppliers and run the product development lifecycle.

Who you are

We think you'll need

• Strong working knowledge of cellular connectivity (e.g. LTE-M, NB-IoT, LTE Cat-1/1bis, 5G) and the direction of travel, plus a real understanding of the module and chipset landscape.

• Solid, practical experience with licensing and Standard Essential Patents in mobile or IoT devices: FRAND principles, patent pools, patent exhaustion and the limits of sublicensing, and how royalties are actually structured and argued.

• Hands-on experience with global type approvals and regulatory certification for radio products — RED/CE, FCC, and the regional approvals that come with selling hardware worldwide.

• Experience working across a hardware supply chain with module suppliers, test houses, notified bodies, and certification partners.

• Communication as a core skill, not a bonus. You can take a genuinely complicated subject and land it in plain language, in writing, with an audience that has no background in it.

• The judgement to know what we can and cannot say to a customer, and the discipline to hold that line even when it would be easier not to.

What matters more than the checklist

• You are honest about uncertainty. In this domain, no one can offer a blanket guarantee, and the people who claim otherwise create problems later. We would rather be accurate than reassuring.

• You are curious and self-driven, this is a field that changes constantly, and nobody is going to hand you a reading list.

• You finish things. A clear one-page answer delivered this week beats a perfect analysis that arrives after the decision was made.

• You are comfortable being the only person in the room who knows a subject, and you use that position to make others smarter rather than to make yourself indispensable.

On AI: experience with AI tooling is not a requirement, but a strong motivation and interest in working with it is. We already use AI in our daily engineering work, including MCP servers and agents against our own platform, and we see clear potential in applying it to research, documentation, and compliance workflows. We don't expect you to have experience with this but we do expect curiosity and a willingness to learn.

This is a specialist role with an unusually wide view of the business, and we've set it up that way on purpose.

• Executive proximity. You will work closely with the SVP of IoT Division, while reporting into a central function for IoT, as the Device Reliability Engineering. You will help in presenting to executive leadership on exposure, risk, and recommendations. Your analysis will inform on a product technical matter (Not Legal) but with real financial and commercial decisions.

• Cross-functional reach. Legal, Finance, Product Management, Engineering, Supply Chain, and Sales all depend on this domain. Few roles at Trackunit touch as many parts of the company.

• External network. You will work with external patent counsel, economic consultants, module suppliers, certification bodies, and industry forums — building a network that extends well beyond Trackunit.
