Solutions Engineer (IT)

Location: Field based, covering Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Berkshire
Salary: £40,000 plus company van plus overtime

Introduction

Focus Group is a £300m-revenue, 1,500-person technology services company backed by Hg Capital. Following our $1bn valuation in 2024, we’re scaling rapidly and investing in AI (artificial intelligence) to transform how we operate and how we serve our 30,000 SME (small and medium-sized enterprise) customers.

We’re looking for a Solutions Engineer to join our Technical Operations team, which keeps everything running smoothly from the moment a customer places an order. You’ll provide support and installations for customers, from small businesses through to large enterprises, working both remotely and on site. You’ll be a subject matter expert in your chosen area and will lead projects within that specialism.

This role will suit someone who likes being with customers every day, solving real problems and working on interesting projects. No two days will look the same, and you’ll see the difference your work makes. There’s also a clear path to grow with us, with future opportunities including Team Manager, and Technical Pre-Sales Consultant.

Key Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide a high quality customer experience, remotely or on site, when installing or maintaining a customer’s ICT solutions.
  • Act as the escalation point for your area of specialism, taking on complex faults and escalations.
  • Work regularly with project management teams, 3rd line engineers and Service Desk Agents.
  • Audit and document our valued customers’ infrastructure to a high standard.
  • Carry out and document site surveys and audits.
  • Lead the delivery of small, medium and large projects as part of a team, remotely or on site. You’ll tend to look after the larger or more complex projects, which often involve several technologies.
  • Lead and support other engineers on complex project deliveries.
  • Join customer calls to contribute to technical discussions, scoping and design.
  • Provide and document best-practice solution design that meets customer requirements.
  • Work with management, colleagues, valued customers and vendors to deliver solutions that meet project requirements.
  • Work closely with our account management and service departments.
  • Lead best practice in your subject area, including training, documentation, our knowledge base and keeping up with industry changes.
  • Act as an internal mentor and adviser in your area of expertise, supporting colleagues and providing technical leadership.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential
  • Prior experience in an IT (information technology) support or delivery role.
  • Demonstrable experience at subject matter expert level in at least one of these areas:
    • Networking: VLANs (virtual local area networks), routing, wireless, Ekahau, Meraki, SonicWall, Cisco and Aruba.
    • Server and storage: Windows Server, storage, Hyper-V, VMware, Microsoft 365 and Azure.
    • Cloud: Microsoft 365, Azure, Intune and SharePoint.
  • Specialist or expert knowledge of a particular technology or service from the list above, alongside broader generalist technical knowledge.
  • The confidence to design solutions within your area of specialism.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills.
  • A strong desire to grow your technical knowledge and customer service skills.
  • Flexibility, as you may occasionally need to adjust your working hours or stay overnight on larger project work.
  • A full, valid UK driving licence.
Desirable
  • Previous experience in an IT managed service environment.
  • Relevant vendor or industry qualifications (Microsoft, Meraki, SonicWall, Aruba or Cisco).
  • An active Microsoft certification, for example MS101, MS100, AZ104 or AZ140.
Behaviours and impact

You’ll be curious and creative in finding technical solutions, and you’ll enjoy sharing knowledge and inspiring other technical talent. You’ll lead medium-sized projects and technically complex challenges and be accountable for delivering the outcomes. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to influence people inside and outside the company are important too.

Internal Job Level Reference: Specialist Team Leader
