ABOUT ETHOS & THE OPPORTUNITY Ethos Risk Services is a leading insurance claims investigation and medical management company focused on delivering better data, technology, and insights that help our clients make better decisions. We are continuing to invest in our technology organization and are seeking an experienced engineering leader to help scale how software is built, tested, and delivered. We are seeking a full-time Vice President of Engineering is accountable for how software is built, tested, and delivered across the organization. Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, this senior leader will oversee an organization of approximately 40 engineering, QA, and delivery professionals through a leadership team of IT Delivery Leads, Technical Product Owners, and a QA Lead. This is an opportunity to shape the engineering operating model at Ethos by strengthening software development processes, engineering standards, CI/CD, quality practices, delivery predictability, and performance measurement. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Leadership & Organization: Lead, mentor, and develop IT Delivery Leads, Technical Product Owners, and the QA Lead, and through them, an engineering organization of approximately 40 professionals. Define clear team structures, responsibilities, and accountability. Culture & Talent: Build a high-performance culture focused on ownership, transparency, and continuous improvement. Partner on hiring, performance management, succession planning, and career development. Development Process & Standards: Establish, document, and continuously improve the software development lifecycle (SDLC), including planning, estimation, code review, testing, release management, and post-release support. Set standards for code quality, documentation, security, branching strategy, and definition of done. Engineering KPIs & Performance: Define and manage engineering KPIs aligned to business goals, including delivery predictability, cycle time, deployment frequency, change failure rate, mean time to recovery (MTTR), and defect escape rate. Use data and reporting to identify gaps and drive improvement. Technology Planning: Partner with Product, Architecture, and the CTO to translate technology strategy into executable development plans and roadmaps. Balance new feature delivery with technical debt, platform modernization, and long-term technology investments. DevOps, CI/CD & Quality: Strengthen CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, environment management, and release reliability. Partner with QA leadership to improve test automation, quality gates, deployment readiness, and rollback procedures. Change Leadership: Lead adoption of new engineering processes, tools, and ways of working. Build buy-in, communicate change clearly, and partner across Engineering, Product, Architecture, Operations, and business teams to drive measurable results. QUALIFICATIONS Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, a related field, or equivalent professional experience is required. Master's degree in a related field is preferred. Required Experience: Minimum of 10 to 15 years of progressive software development and engineering experience, including significant experience leading multiple teams and/or engineering managers. Broad, hands-on background across application development, database design and management, quality assurance, and DevOps. Proven track record establishing SDLC processes and delivery frameworks (Agile, Scrum, Kanban, or hybrid) in a medium-to-large engineering organization. Demonstrated experience defining and managing engineering KPIs and using data to drive decisions. Strong working knowledge of modern CI/CD tooling, source control, automated testing, and cloud or hybrid infrastructure. Experience partnering with architecture and product leadership to translate strategy into executable roadmaps. Preferred Experience: Experience leading organizational transformation, such as DevOps adoption, Agile maturity programs, or platform modernization. Background in regulated or risk-sensitive industries. Relevant certifications (e.g., SAFe, PMP, cloud platform certifications). WORKING AT ETHOS This is a 100% remote U.S.-based role, offering the flexibility to work from home while remaining closely connected to a collaborative leadership team. Our ideal candidate is in the EST time zone. Occasional travel may be required for quarterly or annual leadership meetings and company events.
