Senior Java Developer | Invitise
Location: Glasgow, Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Birmingham, Blackpool or Cardiff, with hybrid working
Contract: Initial 12 months | Rate: Up to £650 per day, Inside IR35
About The Company
Invitise is recruiting a Senior Java Developer for a public sector organisation delivering digital services to people and communities. The organisation works through multidisciplinary agile teams to design, build and operate reliable technology. Its services are supported by modern cloud platforms, automated delivery practices and a focus on secure, resilient operations. You will join a collaborative environment where technical expertise, thoughtful problem-solving and shared responsibility for service outcomes are valued. The role is based from a regional hub in Glasgow, Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Birmingham, Blackpool or Cardiff.
About The Role
As Senior Java Developer, you will build, enhance and maintain cloud-based services on AWS. You will contribute throughout the software lifecycle, from technical design and implementation through to deployment, monitoring and ongoing improvement. Working as part of a multifunctional agile delivery team, you will help shape solutions, write maintainable code and support the dependable operation of the products you deliver.
This is a hybrid contract role with an expectation of attending a regional hub approximately three days per week. The initial contract is 12 months, with a daily rate of up to £650 Inside IR35. You will be trusted to investigate and resolve technical or procedural blockers independently, while working constructively with colleagues across development, delivery and operational functions. The role involves modern CI/CD practices, containerisation and infrastructure defined through code.
Qualifications
You should have substantial, recent experience developing production software in Java, including hands-on work with AWS-based services. You will bring practical expertise in designing and delivering microservices and RESTful APIs, and an understanding of event-driven systems using Kafka. Experience containerising applications with Docker, managing cloud infrastructure through Terraform, and maintaining delivery workflows using GitLab CI is also required.
You will be comfortable applying test-driven development (TDD) and behaviour-driven development (BDD), and experienced in agile delivery. Strong communication skills, sound technical judgement and the ability to take ownership of work are important. Node.js experience would be beneficial, as would familiarity with government departments or public sector delivery environments. You must hold, or be eligible to obtain, Security Check (SC) clearance; active SC clearance is highly desirable.
Responsibilities
Design, develop, test and maintain Java applications and cloud-based services hosted on AWS. Build scalable microservices and RESTful APIs, and implement event-driven integrations using Kafka. Create and manage containerised workloads with Docker, and contribute to infrastructure automation using Terraform. Develop and improve GitLab CI pipelines to support consistent, efficient and dependable software releases.
Work closely with product, engineering and operational colleagues within an agile team. Participate in technical design discussions, code reviews, planning and continuous improvement activities. Apply TDD and BDD practices to help deliver reliable, maintainable software. Monitor the stability and resilience of services, investigate incidents and identify opportunities to strengthen performance and reliability. Take initiative in resolving delivery challenges, documenting decisions and sharing knowledge with the wider team.
Benefits
This opportunity offers a 12-month initial contract, a daily rate of up to £650 Inside IR35, and a choice of regional hub locations across the UK. You will contribute to meaningful public sector services while working with contemporary cloud, automation and software engineering practices. The hybrid arrangement combines collaboration in person, with an expectation to attend a regional hub around three days each week, and flexibility to work remotely for the remainder, subject to the organisation’s arrangements.
Equal Opportunity
Invitise and the hiring organisation are committed to fair and inclusive recruitment. Applications are welcomed from candidates with relevant skills and experience, regardless of background or personal characteristics. Recruitment decisions will be based on role requirements, capability and eligibility, including the applicable security clearance requirements.
