Job Description

Are you ready to turn your passion for technology into real-world impact? General Motors is seeking a motivated and curious Java Software Engineer Intern to join our innovative engineering team.

At GM, we are working toward a future with zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion. As an intern, you’ll gain hands-on experience developing software that supports the future of mobility while learning from experienced engineers in a collaborative, high-performance environment.

This opportunity is designed for students who are excited to build their technical skills, solve meaningful problems, and see how modern software engineering helps transform the automotive industry.

About General Motors

General Motors is a global company driven by engineering, technology, and design. Our teams are developing connected, intelligent, and increasingly autonomous vehicles and services that improve the way people move around the world.

As part of GM, you’ll work alongside talented professionals who are passionate about innovation, customer impact, and building technology that makes a difference.

Your Opportunity

As a Java Software Engineer Intern, you’ll contribute to the design, development, testing, and maintenance of software applications and services. You’ll work with engineering teams to translate requirements into reliable, scalable solutions and gain exposure to the complete software development lifecycle.

You may contribute to applications supporting connected vehicles, cloud platforms, enterprise services, data processing, or other technology initiatives across GM.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop and enhance software applications using Java and object-oriented programming principles.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, architects, product managers, and business partners to understand requirements and deliver effective solutions.
  • Design, implement, and test RESTful APIs and backend services.
  • Write clean, readable, maintainable, and well-documented code.
  • Participate in code reviews and apply feedback to improve software quality.
  • Troubleshoot defects, investigate technical issues, and contribute to root-cause analysis.
  • Create unit and integration tests to validate application functionality and reliability.
  • Work with databases, data models, and SQL queries as part of application development.
  • Use Git and modern CI/CD practices to support efficient software delivery.
  • Contribute to Agile ceremonies, technical discussions, and sprint planning.
  • Learn and apply secure software development and DevSecOps practices.
  • Document technical decisions, solutions, and implementation details.
  • Support continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to simplify processes and reduce manual effort.

What You’ll Bring

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Experience programming in Java through coursework, projects, internships, or personal development.
  • Understanding of object-oriented programming, data structures, algorithms, and software design fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with relational databases and basic SQL.
  • Knowledge of software development practices, debugging, and testing.
  • Familiarity with Git or another version-control system.
  • Interest in developing backend services, APIs, cloud applications, or enterprise software.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to break complex problems into manageable steps.
  • Ability to learn quickly, ask thoughtful questions, and take ownership of assigned work.
  • Collaborative approach and strong written and verbal communication skills.

Why Join GM?

This internship is more than an opportunity to write code. It’s a chance to build your professional network, learn from experienced engineers, contribute to meaningful projects, and discover how your skills can help shape the future of transportation.

Your journey starts here. Join General Motors and help create the technology that will move the world forward.
