Junior Accountant
Company: Return Policy Stays
Location: Toronto, ON (Hybrid / On-site)
Position Type: Full-Time
Salary Range: $55,000 – $65,000 CAD per year
About Return Policy Stays
Return Policy Stays is a fast-growing tech-enabled hospitality startup transforming how people stay, live, and travel. We operate a growing portfolio of modern properties, blending the comfort of home with high-standard hospitality. As we expand our operational footprint, we are looking for a detail-oriented, adaptable Junior Accountant to join our lean finance team in Downtown Toronto.
Role Overview
As a Junior Accountant, you will manage day-to-day transaction processing, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payments, and cash receipts. You will support multiple accounting and finance functions, helping address operational gaps and evolving priorities as we implement new systems and processes across our businesses. This is a high-growth role: as you master operational accounting, you will shadow finance leadership and participate in month-end closing procedures and financial reporting.
Key Responsibilities
1. Accounts Payable & Vendor Management
● Process and code high-volume vendor invoices across multiple departments, properties, and businesses; match invoices to supporting documentation and obtain required approvals before processing.
● Reconcile supplier statements to vendor accounts, investigate discrepancies, and follow up on missing invoices and unapplied credits.
● Respond to supplier payment inquiries and coordinate with suppliers and internal departments to resolve invoice discrepancies and outstanding payment issues.
● Maintain accurate vendor setup information and transaction records in the accounting system.
● Reconcile corporate credit card statements to supporting receipts and accounting records, code expenses to the appropriate departments, properties, and businesses, and follow up on missing documentation or discrepancies.
2. Banking & Payments
● Prepare accounts payable aging reports to identify upcoming and overdue amounts. Compile proposed payment schedules based on invoice due dates and supplier payment terms.
● Prepare electronic funds transfers (EFTs), wire payments, and cheque runs, and submit them for approval before payment release.
● Record approved supplier payments in the accounting system, apply them to the corresponding outstanding invoices, and maintain supporting documentation.
3. Accounts Receivable & Invoicing
● Prepare and issue accurate customer and client invoices on a timely basis and maintain up-to-date records of outstanding receivables.
● Record cash receipts from clients in the accounting system and apply them to the appropriate client accounts and outstanding invoices.
● Reconcile payments to the corresponding reservation bookings and flag any payments that have not been successfully processed.
Qualifications & Skills
● Education: Post-secondary diploma or bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration. Interest in pursuing the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is an asset but is not required.
● Experience: 1–2 years of accounting, bookkeeping, or accounts payable/accounts receivable experience. Experience in a startup or hospitality business is an asset.
● Accounting knowledge and systems: Working knowledge of double-entry bookkeeping, accounts payable and receivable, transaction coding, and account reconciliations.
● Intercompany & Multi-Entity: Exposure to intercompany transactions or multiple entity structures is an asset.
● Excel and analysis: Intermediate Microsoft Excel skills, including sorting and filtering data, lookup functions, SUMIFS, and PivotTables.
● Traits: Strong attention to detail, proactive problem-solver, and comfortable operating in a dynamic, fast-paced startup environment.
What We Offer
● Competitive base salary ($55,000 – $65,000 CAD) commensurate with experience.
● Structured growth path to take on full-cycle month-end responsibilities within 6–12 months.
● Health & dental benefits package.
● Flexible hybrid work environment in Toronto.
