Junior Test Automation Engineer | Outside IR35

Junior Test Automation Consultant | Outside IR35 | Mostly Remote

SR2 is recruiting a Junior Test Automation Consultant to support a public sector digital programme. This would suit someone with around two years’ testing experience who has started building automated tests and wants to develop their hands-on skills further.

The Role

You’ll work alongside developers and experienced testers to test digital services, maintain automated regression tests and investigate defects. The focus will be on contributing to existing frameworks and helping the team deliver reliable software.

Key Responsibilities

• Write and maintain automated tests within an existing framework.
• Test web applications and APIs, covering core functionality and integrations.
• Turn user stories and acceptance criteria into practical test scenarios.
• Investigate test failures, document defects and verify fixes.
• Carry out exploratory testing to identify issues beyond automated coverage.
• Support automated test execution through CI/CD pipelines.
  
  

Essential

• Around two years’ experience in software testing, including hands-on automation.
• Experience with an automation tool such as Playwright or Selenium.
• Ability to write and update test scripts using Java, JavaScript or TypeScript.
• Some experience testing REST APIs using Postman or similar tools.
• Understanding of functional, regression and exploratory testing.
• Familiarity with Git and working within an Agile delivery team.
  
  

Desirable

• Exposure to Cucumber, Serenity BDD or REST Assured.
• Familiarity with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins.
• Basic SQL skills for checking test data.
• Awareness of accessibility testing.
• Previous public sector project experience.
• SC Clearance
  
  

The Details

• Contract role: Initially until 31 March 2027, with a 6 months extension.
• IR35 Status: Outside IR35.
• Rate: £250p/d – £275p/d
• Location: Mostly remote, with travel to London every two weeks.
