We are looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer with strong expertise in LANSA and Visual LANSA development. In this role, you will design, develop, enhance, and support business-critical enterprise applications running on IBM i (AS/400).

The role requires strong technical knowledge of Visual LANSA, RDML/RDMLX, IBM i, DB2, SQL, application integration, and production support. You will work closely with business analysts, architects, quality assurance teams, product owners, and other technology stakeholders to deliver reliable, scalable, and maintainable solutions.

As a senior member of the team, you will also provide technical guidance, support application-modernization initiatives, mentor other developers, and contribute to continuous improvement across the software-development lifecycle.

ABOUT THE TEAM

The team is responsible for developing, enhancing, supporting, and modernizing enterprise applications that support key business operations.

We work closely with global technology and business teams to deliver reliable software solutions, improve the user experience, automate business processes, and maintain the stability and performance of business-critical systems.

The team promotes collaboration, knowledge sharing, technical excellence, continuous improvement, and high-quality delivery.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

Application Development and Design

• Design, develop, test, implement, and maintain applications using LANSA, Visual LANSA, RDML, and RDMLX.

• Analyze business requirements and translate them into effective technical solutions.

• Prepare technical designs, program specifications, and implementation plans.

• Develop reusable, scalable, and maintainable application components.

• Enhance existing applications in accordance with established architecture and coding standards.

• Participate in all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle, including analysis, design, development, testing, implementation, and production support.

• Conduct code reviews and ensure compliance with development standards and best practices.

• Develop unit-test cases and perform technical validation before delivering changes for functional testing.

IBM i and Database Development

• Develop and support enterprise applications running on IBM i (AS/400).

• Design, develop, and maintain DB2 database objects and SQL queries.

• Perform SQL query optimization and application-performance tuning.

• Work with IBM i files, job queues, batch jobs, and system processes.

• Support data migration, data conversion, and data-integration activities.

• Ensure data integrity, application security, system availability, and operational reliability.

Production Support and Problem Resolution

• Investigate and resolve application defects and production incidents within agreed service levels.

• Perform root-cause analysis and implement permanent corrective solutions.

• Monitor application performance and proactively identify potential issues.

• Support batch-processing activities, scheduled jobs, interfaces, and integrations.

• Participate in application releases, deployment activities, and post-implementation validation.

• Document production issues, resolutions, support procedures, and preventive actions.

Application Modernization and Innovation

• Contribute to application-modernization and technology-transformation initiatives.

• Support the modernization of legacy or green-screen applications into user-friendly GUI or web-based applications.

• Improve the user experience through screen enhancements, control improvements, and process simplification.

• Identify opportunities to automate manual processes and improve operational efficiency.

• Evaluate new tools, technologies, and development approaches.

• Recommend improvements that enhance application performance, scalability, maintainability, and security.

Technical Leadership and Collaboration

• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior and intermediate developers.

• Lead technical discussions, solution-design sessions, and code reviews.

• Collaborate with business analysts, architects, quality assurance teams, product owners, project managers, and production-support teams.

• Assist with effort estimation, resource planning, delivery planning, and technical-risk assessment.

• Coordinate with global development and support teams to deliver project objectives.

• Promote knowledge sharing, documentation, and continuous learning within the team.

• Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

• A minimum of 7 years of software-development experience, with significant hands-on experience in LANSA and Visual LANSA.

• Strong development experience using LANSA RDML and RDMLX.

• Strong knowledge of the IBM i (AS/400) platform.

• Experience working with DB2 databases and SQL programming.

• Experience developing and supporting Visual LANSA Framework applications.

• Strong understanding of application design, software architecture, coding standards, and development best practices.

• Experience supporting enterprise applications in production environments.

• Ability to analyze and troubleshoot complex technical and functional issues.

• Experience with batch processing, job scheduling, file processing, and system integration.

• Experience with source-control tools and software-release processes.

• Strong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

• Good understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.

• Ability to collaborate effectively with globally distributed teams.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline.

• Equivalent combinations of education, training, and relevant professional experience may also be considered.

• A postgraduate degree or relevant technical certification would be an advantage.
