Law and Motion Associate

About the Role

A California civil defense firm is seeking a Law and Motion Associate to join its law and motion and appeals team. You will provide written advocacy across litigation practice areas and help shape litigation strategy through research, analysis, and motion practice.

What You'll Do

• Draft pretrial motions and oppositions, including pleading-related, discovery, and dispositive motions.

• Prepare trial documents, including motions in limine, trial briefs, pocket briefs, jury instructions, and verdict forms.

• Draft post-trial motions, including motions for new trial and attorney's fees.

• Research complex legal issues and provide recommendations to litigation attorneys and clients.

• Assess litigation and appellate strategies, with opportunities to handle appeals and present appellate arguments.

What We're Looking For

• Juris Doctor degree and active membership in good standing with the California State Bar.

• Two to ten years of civil litigation defense experience, with a strong focus on legal writing and motion practice.

• Experience drafting motions, oppositions, or appellate briefs, supported by a writing sample.

• Knowledge of California civil procedure and substantive law, including experience with civil defense matters.

• Strong legal research, writing, analytical, and complex issue-spotting skills.

• Experience using legal research tools such as Westlaw or LexisNexis.

• Ability to meet a billable-hours requirement of 1,920 hours annually.

Compensation & Benefits

Annual base salary: $130,000 to $185,000. Visa sponsorship is not available.

Location

Hybrid role based in Los Angeles, California, with additional work locations in Costa Mesa and San Francisco.
