Lead Backend Engineer AI

Velocity Tech has partnered with an exciting AI-powered commerce business to hire a Senior Backend Engineer – Shopping Agents.

Berlin, Germany | Remote | Full-time

We're working with an ambitious, venture-backed technology business operating at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence, Agentic AI and E-commerce.

The business is building infrastructure that enables AI agents to shop across the open web and complete purchases end-to-end — including real shopping carts, payments and retailer integrations.

This is an opportunity to join a highly technical team working on a genuinely challenging problem in the future of online commerce.

What you'll be working on:

🔹 AI Shopping Agents: Building and scaling frontier-model computer-use agents capable of navigating live retail websites and completing checkout processes autonomously.

🔹 Backend Infrastructure: Taking ownership of architecture, development, deployments, monitoring and production reliability.

🔹 Large-Scale Data Ingestion: Scaling product ingestion from hundreds to thousands of sources through automated infrastructure.

🔹 Search & Ranking: Working with embedding-based retrieval, LLM query understanding, reranking and caching across constantly evolving product catalogues.

What we're looking for:

• 5+ years' experience building backend and infrastructure systems.
• Strong Python engineering experience.
• Experience owning production systems end-to-end, including deployments, databases and observability.
• Someone comfortable working in fast-moving environments with evolving requirements.
• Strong understanding of system reliability, scalability and performance.
• A genuine interest in solving complex engineering challenges.

Nice to have:

• Experience building AI-first products or production LLM-based agents.
• Knowledge of machine learning, deep learning, retrieval and ranking.
• Background in e-commerce, payments, fraud or risk infrastructure.
