Lead CHP Maintenance & Reliability Engineer
Biosus EnergyCompany Overview:
Biosus Energy Ltd is a forward-thinking leader in distributed onsite power generation. We are seeking a highly motivated, dual-focused hands-on Lead CHP Maintenance & Reliability Engineer to join our dynamic team. You will play a pivotal role in accelerating the transition to clean, renewable energy by ensuring our projects and customer-sited plants operate at peak efficiency and optimum availability.
Role Overview:
In this senior, hybrid role, you will balance 60% hands-on site maintenance, optimization and engineering with a plan down the line to focus on 40% maintenance planning, systems development, and reliability strategy. You will take ownership of the optimal uptime and asset lifecycle of our Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants, operating primarily between Mintlaw and Buckie, with occasional travel to Perth & Lanark.
Our diverse infrastructure features modern, advanced technologies: our Mintlaw site utilizes advanced wood gasification, while our Buckie facility is gas-powered. Beyond executing high-quality mechanical repairs and advanced troubleshooting, you will lead the implementation of our eMaint CMMS, spearhead root-cause analysis (RCA), and build our Dave AI knowledge base to institutionalise engineering excellence. Aim to drive the organisation to ISO55001 Asset Management standard.
Key Responsibilities
Site Execution & Operations (60%)
- Advanced Engineering Support: Travel between sites in Mintlaw, Buckie, and occasionally Perth to execute high-quality mechanical repairs and routine servicing.
- Plant Optimization: Monitor plant operations and indicators closely to ensure heavy industrial equipment, large reciprocating engines, and auxiliary systems run at peak safety and efficiency.
- Operational Control: Start, stop, and adjust generators, auxiliary pumping equipment, compressors, condensers, and filtration systems as required.
- Shutdown Leadership: Form a core part of the shutdown team, managing complex overhauls and minor field repairs (e.g., pipe joints, glands, and alignments).
- Safety & Compliance: Adhere strictly to company health, safety, and environmental regulations, ensuring a clean, secure, and compliant working environment.
Reliability, Strategy & Systems (40%)
- CMMS & Planning: Lead the development, structuring, and optimization of the eMaint CMMS platform to streamline asset tracking and digital management systems.
- Root-Cause Analysis (RCA): Spearhead advanced fault-finding investigations and execute formal RCAs on complex mechanical and systemic failures to minimize chronic downtime.
- AI Knowledge-Building: Synthesize operational data, engineering insights, and equipment history to actively build and train the Dave AI knowledge base.
- Maintenance Engineering: Design, schedule, and refine detailed planned preventative maintenance (PPM) programmes across wood gasification and gas-powered CHP systems.
- Reporting & Logistics: Review maintenance logs, track parts inventories, and compile high-level operational data to drive continuous plant improvement.
On-Call & Standby Structure
- Participate in a structured on-call rotation covering 7 days every 2nd week to manage urgent breakdowns and maintain plant continuity.
- Remote response capability is required during on-call weeks to diagnose issues prior to deployment.
Qualifications & Skills (please only apply if you meet this criteria):
- Proven Track Record: Extensive experience working with heavy industrial equipment, engine overhauls (incl. oil/heads gaskets, cooling systems etc), large reciprocating engines, or specific expertise with wood gasification and gas-powered engines.
- Reliability Expertise: Demonstrated experience in maintenance planning, CMMS systems (ideally eMaint), and root-cause analysis methodologies.
- Technical Aptitude: Strong mechanical mastery with an advanced capability for complex, systemic troubleshooting.
- Autonomy & Drive: Highly self-motivated, capable of working independently with minimal supervision, and possessing a proactive approach to engineering strategy.
- Mobility: A valid, clean UK Driving Licence is essential.
Benefits:
- Basic Salary: Competeitive salary negotiable dependent on experience (based on a 37.5-hour week).
- On-Call Allowance: £150 for each scheduled on-call week.
- Travel & Call-Outs: Remote work, travel time, and physical call-outs are paid separately (rates to be detailed at interview).
- Bonus & Pension: Performance-related Yearly Bonus and Company Pension.
- Company vehicle: Company van and fuel card supplied for work travel and commuting between sites.
- Holidays: 28 days’ holiday plus public holidays.
How to Apply (Cover Letter Requirements)
To be considered for this senior, hybrid role, please submit your CV along with a short, tailored cover letter to hr@biosusenergy.com. We receive many generic applications, so applications without a cover letter answering the following three questions will not be reviewed:
- Your Technical & Engine Experience: This role requires extensive, hands-on experience with heavy industrial equipment and large reciprocating engine overhauls (such as oil/head gaskets, cooling systems). Please briefly highlight your specific experience in this area.
- Your System & Reliability Experience: A key part of this role involves structuring our eMaint CMMS, leading Root-Cause Analysis (RCA), and developing maintenance strategy. What experience do you have with CMMS platforms (e.g., eMaint, Maximo, SAP) and maintenance planning?
- Logistics & On-Call Rotation: The role requires commuting primarily between Mintlaw and Buckie (occasionally to other sites in locations like Perth & Lanark), alongside a structured 1-in-2 week on-call rotation. Please confirm that you hold a valid, clean UK driving licence and are comfortable with this travel and standby schedule.
