Job Location: This is a remote position and will require candidates to be in EST or CST, and travel may be required from time to time.
Salary Range: $120,000-$140,000/annually

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The Essential Duties and Responsibilities are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties, but not all duties performed for this position. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Produce self-perform heavy civil cost estimates including crew assemblies and production rates based on various project size, scope, and mix within the heavy civil market. Estimates should be based on the estimator’s experience and knowledge from working for a self-perform civil contractor.
  • Furnish accurate and clear quantity takeoff information to provide a detailed list of materials and assess the total construction costs.
  • Identify, source and analyze potential subcontractor and vendor quotes to determine comprehensive, best value partnerships.
  • Identify, quantify, and evaluate potential risks, and develop a plan for how operations will address them.
  • Prepare, seek review of, and submit inquiries to clients regarding drawings, specifications, and scopes of work.
  • Collaborate with a team of in-house professionals from both the field and office in preparation of each estimate.
  • Meet interim estimate milestones to allow for successive reviews by team members and superiors, such as constructability and productivity reviews, to provide adequate time for re-calibration as necessary in order to meet submission deadlines.
  • Support constructability reviews through communication with the project team, designers, and subcontractor market. Prepare alternate constructability approaches as needed.
  • Obtain and thoroughly vet subcontractor and supplier pricing as needed to ensure comprehensive scope coverage.
  • Interact with Operations and support operational needs after award including potential alternates, options, discussion of bid-day assessments, and potential site conditions differing from those scoped in the contracting documents.

Minimum Qualifications:

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualifications listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • A bachelor's degree, preferably in construction management or civil engineering, is required.
  • Must have field experience in self-perform contracting of all civil infrastructure scopes of work including, but not limited to, earthwork/grading, underground utilities (e.g., water/sewer/storm), dewatering, demolition, road construction and repair, dam/levee construction and/or repair, and pavement / flatwork preparation.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ estimating experience in the heavy civil construction industry.
  • Experience estimating federal projects is preferred.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret contract documents, drawings, specifications, scopes of work, and project schedules. Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to research each pursuit thoroughly, orally and graphically present a pursuit to a group, clearly communicate the logic used to construct the pursuit estimate, and modify the logic of the estimate to match a group consensus for each pursuit. Be able to recognize the need for additional support and resources to complete identified pursuit/estimate preparation.
  • The successful candidate will have experience with spreadsheets, word processing, CPM scheduling, and estimating software such as Bid2Win (B2W), HCSS Heavy Bid, etc.

Additional Qualifying Factors:

As a condition of employment, you will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening (post accepted offer) and have acceptable background check results. If applicable to the contract, you must also obtain the appropriate clearance levels required and be able to obtain access to military installations.

This position requires the ability to maneuver around work sites, see, hear, and verbally communicate with co-workers and clients. Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for bending, stooping, sitting, walking or standing for prolonged periods of time; frequent opportunity to move about and to work outside the office environment for extended periods involving exposure to the elements with weather that will include extreme heat, cold, wind, rain or other inclement weather, walking over rough and uneven surfaces, and routine lifting of up to 35 pounds. If required, must properly use personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times including but not limited to: hard hats, steel-toed boots, eye protection, respiratory protection, and hearing protection. Must always maintain a constant state of mental alertness.

Working Conditions:

Job is performed in a combination of office and outdoor site locations. The office setting includes exposure to computer screens and requires extensive use of a computer, keyboard, and mouse. Outdoor settings include walking, driving, and carrying supplies throughout all seasons with exposure to heat and cold conditions, and potentially wildlife. Is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and loud noise.
