Show job description
Most power engineering roles are about turning out one-line after one-line the way it's been done for decades. This one is different. Yes, you'll design medium-voltage distribution, run the studies, and take projects through utility review, but you'll also work shoulder-to-shoulder with our AI and software team to encode your expertise into a system that produces coordinated power designs faster and more reliably than anything the industry has seen. You won't just be doing the work. You'll be re-imagining how it gets done.

The Opportunity

Monterra is a new kind of consulting engineering firm specializing in power infrastructure for modular data centers, battery storage, microgrids, onsite generation, and EV charging. Our licensed PEs work with AI agents developed in-house to deliver engineering services faster while remaining in responsible charge of every design.

Since launching the service a few months ago, we've been winning and delivering projects, and our client base is quickly growing.

We're hiring our first MV Electrical Engineer, who will serve as the technical authority and in-house subject matter expert on medium-voltage power systems. You’ll work closely with our Principal Electrical Engineers on projects ranging from modular AI data center deployments and battery storage to heavy-duty truck charging hubs. You’ll own MV technical design, lead the development of our MV engineering standards and processes, and help translate your engineering expertise into the AI-powered workflows that make Monterra different. In this role, your time will be split across:

  • Client project delivery (~60%): full-cycle electrical design, from site layout and one-lines through utility/AHJ review and construction support.

  • Discipline building (~20%): establish and continuously improve Monterra's MV engineering standards, design practices, and quality controls.

  • Shaping the AI (~20%): set the standards and design rules our AI agents follow, and work with our product & engineering team to make them better on every project.

What You'll Do

Substation & Medium-Voltage Design (15-69 kV)

  • Design customer-owned substations and MV distribution for data centers, BESS, microgrids, and large charging sites: develop one-line and three-line diagrams, physical layouts, grounding, and raceway.

  • Specify power transformers, breakers, switchgear, reclosers, and instrument transformers.

  • Integrate generators and BESS at the MV level, including paralleling and transfer schemes.

Studies & Protection

  • Perform short-circuit, load flow, arc flash, and grounding grid studies, and use the results to drive equipment selection.

  • Run the protection coordination study, including relay settings and CT/PT sizing, and develop the MV protection philosophy.

  • Familiarity with substation calculations like system X/R calculation, DC Battery System sizing, surge arrestor sizing, and Harmonic Distortion.

Coordination & Delivery

  • Take MV design packages through utility service and interconnection review.

  • Coordinate equipment pads, duct banks, and site layout with our civil engineer.

  • Respond to utility and AHJ comments and support construction RFIs and submittals.

  • Seal substation and MV sheets on projects where you serve as the engineer in responsible charge.

Engineering Standards & Shaping Our AI Agents

  • Own Monterra's MV engineering standards, including standard details, design templates, and QC checklists.

  • Define the technical rules our AI agents follow, review and validate their engineering output, and work with our AI platform team to continuously improve the system.

Who You Are

You're a power engineer who loves and takes pride in your craft, but also a little frustrated by the monotony and the slow pace of change in the industry. You've designed MV power systems end to end, you know what a utility reviewer looks for, and you can lay out a ring bus lineup any day. But you're also the person on your team who is always trying out and evangelizing new ideas and tools, experimenting with new ways of working, and building spreadsheets or scripts to automate your own studies. If that sounds like you, this could be the right role for you!

Required

  • Active electrical PE license, with willingness to obtain comity licensure in other states we work in.

  • 7+ years of engineering experience, including 5+ years of MV distribution or substation design at 15-69 kV, with ownership of full design packages.

  • Hands-on power system studies in ETAP, SKM, SES CDEGS, PSS SINCAL, or similar.

  • Working knowledge of IEEE substation and protection standards, NEC, and NESC.

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD: you don’t need to be an “AutoCAD wizard”, but should know enough to be dangerous.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to explain engineering decisions to non-specialists (e.g., software engineer teammates) and work closely with clients and teammates.

  • Qualities we value: intensely curious, strong team player, pursuit of excellence, strong sense of ownership and accountability, self-starter, creative problem solver. Equally comfortable being scrappy or meticulous, depending on the situation.

Preferred But Not Required

  • Experience on high-voltage projects (up to 138 kV class).

  • Experience designing power systems for data centers, BESS, microgrids, solar, or on-site generation, including integration of generators and inverter-based resources into MV systems.

  • Familiarity with protection relays and settings (SEL or similar).

  • Experience with utility service and interconnection requirements across multiple utilities or jurisdictions.

  • Comfort with AI tools and enthusiasm for using AI to improve engineering workflows. No coding experience required.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience.

  • Meaningful early-stage equity: you'll be the first MV engineer on a small team, not employee #50.

  • Benefits including but not limited to: health, vision, and dental insurance, unlimited PTO, and more.

  • Remote-first; occasional travel for site visits, customer meetings, conferences, and team gatherings.
