Job Summary
Royal London is looking for a Lead Software Engineer to provide technical leadership for our Customer Identity & Access Management (CIAM) engineering team within our Digital function.
This is a hands-on leadership role for an experienced software engineer who enjoys designing, building and evolving modern digital applications. You'll play a key role in shaping the technical direction of our customer identity platforms, leading the delivery of secure, scalable and resilient solutions that support millions of customer interactions.
Working primarily with C#/.NET and Azure, you'll lead a cross-functional squad, driving engineering excellence while remaining actively involved in solution design, development and delivery. Alongside building high-quality applications, you'll coach and support engineers to help create a strong and collaborative engineering culture.
As this role sits within our Identity & Access Management team, experience within the IAM domain is essential. Experience of Customer Identity & Access Management (CIAM) solutions would be particularly valuable.
You'll work closely with Product Owners, Architects, Cloud Engineers and Mobile teams to deliver customer-focused digital services that make a real difference to our customers and colleagues.
About the Role
As a Lead Software Engineer, you'll combine technical leadership with hands-on delivery, ensuring solutions are secure, scalable, resilient and aligned to both customer and business needs.
You'll be responsible for:
- Leading the design, development and delivery of complex software solutions, ensuring both functional and non-functional requirements are met.
- Designing, building, testing and operating C#/.NET services deployed within Azure.
- Providing technical leadership across the squad, guiding design decisions and engineering approaches.
- Producing high-quality technical designs and impact assessments for new and existing applications.
- Ensuring appropriate documentation and governance standards are met ahead of delivery.
- Championing engineering best practice, including clean code, automated testing, observability and continuous improvement.
- Collaborating with Architects, Analysts, Test Engineers, Product Owners and stakeholders to deliver valuable outcomes.
- Supporting the operation of live services, including incident management, troubleshooting and continuous optimisation.
- Mentoring and developing engineers, fostering a high-performing and supportive team culture.
- Contributing to the ongoing evolution of software engineering practices across Royal London
About You
You're an experienced software engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems and helping others succeed. You're comfortable leading from the front, making sound technical decisions while balancing delivery, quality and long-term sustainability.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Strong software engineering background, with experience leading delivery across the full software development lifecycle.
- Proven experience designing, building and maintaining modern web applications using C#/.NET and associated technologies.
- Strong experience of Identity & Access Management architecture, implementation and support.
- Hands-on knowledge of OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWT and secure token-based integration patterns.
- Experience building and operating applications within Azure cloud environments, with a focus on application architecture, resilience and security.
- Strong understanding of API-first and service-oriented architecture.
- Experience implementing and using CI/CD pipelines to safely build, test and deploy applications.
- Strong focus on software quality, including testing, performance, security, operational readiness and resilience.
- Ability to work autonomously and make informed technical decisions.
- Previous experience leading and mentoring engineers at different stages of their careers.
- Passion for continuous improvement and engineering excellence.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Experience investigating and resolving complex production issues.
Nice to Have
- Experience with Angular or similar front-end frameworks.
- Experience with Azure services such as App Services, Functions, Storage, Key Vault and Application Insights.
