The Opportunity

AAPC seeks a hands-on lead software engineer to help build and evolve the customer-facing digital products, e-commerce experiences, and marketing technology that take people from discovery through membership, certification, and renewal. Our Marketing team relies on capable platforms, including HubSpot, Contentful, RudderStack, and our CRM. The opportunity now is to connect them with a clear integration strategy, so data flows reliably into a holistic view of our members and customers, and Marketing has the insight it needs to do its best work.

This role is for someone who can see the whole forest and still build what is needed. We default to buying proven platforms and integrating them well, and you know how to work inside those systems as designed. But purchased tools are only part of the picture. Some needs call for custom software: customer-facing applications, e-commerce and member experiences, services, APIs, and event pipelines that fill gaps between platforms and carry logic unique to AAPC. When building is the right call, you design, deliver, and support that software to the same standard as any production system: well-tested, secure, observable, and maintainable.

You will not do this alone. You will work closely with our platform engineering team, understanding and contributing to the cloud infrastructure, deployment pipelines, and observability that everything you build runs on. You will also partner with our data platform team to ensure member and customer data, including the identifiers and events needed to connect identities across systems, arrives complete, consistent, and ready to use.

Modern tooling has fundamentally changed what an exceptional engineer can accomplish. In this role, you will treat AI as an extension of your engineering team. By leveraging agentic coding tools, reusable skills, agentic engineering practices, established components, and internal frameworks, you will orchestrate work that historically required a much larger team. You will bring the same thinking to Marketing itself, building AI-enabled tools and workflows that make marketers more self-sufficient.

This is primarily a hands-on engineering role. You will serve as the technical lead for our Marketing Technology team, helping set standards and supporting a team with strong front-end and CMS skills as they grow into well-rounded engineers across integration and data work, automated testing and observability, and agentic engineering practices. From time to time, you will also step into interim team leadership to keep work moving.

What You’ll Do

  • Help define the integration strategy and target architecture for AAPC’s marketing technology ecosystem, including HubSpot, Contentful, RudderStack, our CRM, and the other systems Marketing depends on.

  • Design, build, and operate custom services, APIs, and customer-facing applications, including e-commerce and member experiences for both anonymous visitors and logged-in members, where purchased platforms fall short. Support them in production after launch, held to the same standards as the rest of our production software.

  • Build and maintain the integrations, adapters, and CMS components that connect our platforms and let Marketing self-serve routine changes, with loose coupling, well-defined data contracts, and security built in.

  • Partner with our data platform and platform engineering teams to get member, customer, and engagement data flowing reliably into our data platform, including the events, identifiers, and consent data needed to connect identities across web, email, CRM, and commerce, so Marketing has a trustworthy, holistic view of the people we serve.

  • Translate our search and AI-visibility strategy (SEO, GEO, and AEO) into technical capabilities, such as structured data, machine-readable content, metadata architecture, and crawler-friendly application patterns, so people and AI agents can find and understand what we offer.

  • Recommend when to build, buy, integrate, or retire. Reduce our technology footprint by consolidating overlapping tools and moving one-off solutions onto trusted, supported platforms.

  • Partner with our platform engineering team to meet the platform’s infrastructure, deployment, and observability standards, so the software and integrations you build run on our cloud infrastructure with the same monitoring and incident response as the rest of our platform.

  • Go beyond system health to behavioral observability: confirm that critical customer journeys, authentication, integrations, GA4 measurement, consent behavior, and e-commerce flows still work correctly after every release, so engineering catches and owns problems rather than customers discovering them.

  • Contribute to our shared engineering lifecycle: build automated test coverage into your work, use and strengthen the quality gates in platform engineering’s CI/CD pipelines, and verify releases across application boundaries.

  • Own delivery of the software you build, from discovery and technical design through implementation, deployment, support, and continuous improvement.

  • Work directly with Marketing to understand the business question behind each request, translate it into technical direction, and push back when a request does not serve the strategy.

  • Serve as technical lead for the Marketing Technology team: help set standards, review designs and code, document architectural decisions, and mentor engineers in integration, data, testing, observability, and agentic practices.

  • Build AI-enabled capabilities for Marketing, such as segmentation, personalization, and workflow automation, with appropriate guardrails for data quality and privacy.

  • Treat consent, privacy, and responsible handling of personal data as design requirements from the start.

  • Create and improve reusable skills, components, frameworks, workflows, and automation that increase the effectiveness of future engineering work.

  • Measure success by marketing and business outcomes, not by the number of stories completed or the amount of code produced.

What We’re Looking For

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a recent record of writing and shipping production code yourself, including senior or lead-level ownership of systems that span multiple platforms and teams.

  • Experience designing, building, and operating production customer-facing web applications and digital products, ideally including e-commerce or member experiences.

  • Strong software engineering fundamentals: you have designed, built, tested, and operated custom services in production, not only configured or connected third-party tools.

  • A track record of designing loosely coupled, distributed systems with well-defined data models and contracts.

  • Hands-on experience integrating marketing and customer platforms, such as marketing automation, CRM, CMS, CDP, and commerce, through their APIs, webhooks, events, and native extension points. This is critical domain experience for the role.

  • Experience building customer data foundations alongside data and platform teams: event tracking, identity resolution inputs, pipelines into a warehouse or data platform, and the data quality practices that keep them trustworthy.

  • Strong judgment about when to configure, integrate, or build, and the discipline to choose the simplest path that will hold up over time.

  • Practical experience deploying and running software on cloud infrastructure, including CI/CD, infrastructure as code, observability, monitoring, and production support.

  • Experience using agentic coding tools in your daily work, and the ability to direct, evaluate, and integrate AI-generated work while retaining full accountability for its correctness and quality.

  • Fluency in marketing concepts such as funnels, lead lifecycle, attribution, segmentation, and campaign operations, and the ability to talk with marketers in their terms.

  • Experience leading technically: setting direction, mentoring engineers, and influencing stakeholders who do not report to you.

  • Working knowledge of privacy and consent requirements, such as CCPA, CAN-SPAM, and consent management, as they apply to marketing data.

  • Clear, concise communication, especially when raising questions, explaining tradeoffs, or pushing back on a request.

  • The initiative to improve the systems and processes around you rather than repeatedly working around the same problems.

Preferred Experience

  • HubSpot, including data synchronization between marketing automation and CRM platforms.

  • Contentful or another headless CMS, including content modeling, component development, and integrations.

  • RudderStack or another customer data platform, including event-tracking design and identity resolution.

  • Leading a marketing technology modernization or platform consolidation without disrupting live campaigns.

We value demonstrated capability, judgment, and personal drive. This role calls for someone who has seen marketing technology done well and done poorly, has the scars to show for it, and can use that experience to help a team move quickly and deliberately. We will level this role based on demonstrated capability, from senior through principal.

Show Us What Drives You

We want to know what you chose to build, not just what an employer assigned to you. We encourage you to share something that demonstrates your curiosity, initiative, and passion for the craft. The subject matter does not need to align with AAPC’s products. We are interested in what you chose to learn, the problems you encountered, the decisions you made, and whether you cared enough to bring the idea to life. If you have an integration, data, or marketing technology story you are proud of, or one that taught you a hard lesson, we would love to hear it.
