Learning Designer

ARQ Innovation

Is this job info correct?

Learning Designer | Capability & Experience

Multiple roles · Full-time & Part-time · Fixed term · 3–6 months

Remote · New Zealand

Future-proof your craft.

Learning design is changing.

At ARQ Innovation, we don't start with content. We start with capability, what people need to be able to do, the decisions they need to make and the situations they need to be ready for.

Then we design opportunities to practise.

We're growing our team and looking for experienced Learning Designers to join ARQ Innovation across multiple full-time and part-time roles for an initial 3–6 month fixed term.

You'll work directly with clients and SMEs, turning complex business challenges and subject matter into engaging experiences that build skills and capability through scenarios, decisions, challenges and meaningful practice.

You'll bring strong learning design fundamentals. We'll give you the opportunity to develop those further using ARQ Waypoint, our authoring tools and the AI-enabled production workflows we're using to rethink how learning experiences are designed and built.

These are remote roles open to candidates across New Zealand. If you're Auckland-based, you'll also have the option to work from our co-working space when you want to.

What you'll do

  • Run discovery sessions with clients, stakeholders and SMEs
  • Get underneath the content to identify the real capability or performance need
  • Make sense of complex documents, frameworks and source material — and work out what actually matters
  • Work with skills and capability frameworks
  • Design experiences that let people apply knowledge, make decisions, solve problems and practise capability
  • Write excellent storyboards, scenarios, dialogue, narratives and instructional copy
  • Design for ARQ Waypoint and build experiences using FORGE Creator, our scenario-based authoring environment
  • Work directly in our authoring environment — from discovery and storyboard through to final review
  • Manage stakeholder and SME reviews
  • Quality assure experiences before client review
  • Use feedback, evidence and data to improve what we create
  • Contribute to ARQs internal AI R&D projects

What we're looking for

You might currently call yourself a Learning Designer, Instructional Designer or Learning Experience Designer. We're less interested in the title and more interested in how you think.

You'll have strong learning design fundamentals and experience working directly with clients, stakeholders and SMEs.

You can take a messy collection of documents, SME knowledge and business requirements and turn it into something clear, engaging and useful.

You can write well. You can tell a story. You can ask great questions.

You understand that a good scenario isn't simply a multiple-choice question with a character standing next to it.

You think beyond what someone needs to know and consider what they need to do, practise and become better at.

You're comfortable learning new technology and interested in becoming increasingly hands-on in how your designs are built.

And you're prepared to challenge the brief when learning isn't actually the answer.

Bring your craft. We'll add to your toolkit.

You don't need previous experience with our ARQ Waypoint platform or FORGE Creator, we'll teach you that.

What matters is that you're curious, comfortable learning new technology and excited to get hands-on.

You'll learn how we design for skills and capability, create scenario-based experiences in FORGE, connect practice and interactions to skills frameworks, work through review and iteration, and use our AI-enabled production workflows.

Over time, we'd expect the line between storyboarding and building to become increasingly blurred. Rather than designing something in one tool for somebody else to recreate in another, you'll be able to take more of your thinking directly into the experience itself.

That's a big part of what we think the future of this role looks like.

AI and emerging technology are changing how learning gets produced. We think that's an opportunity for great designers to spend more time on the things that really matter: understanding capability, designing better practice, solving harder problems and creating experiences that make a difference.

If you're looking at where our industry is heading and thinking "I want to be part of that", we'd love to hear from you.
