Learning Experience Designer
Remote – UK | Full time
Help us design learning for a world being changed by AI
The Virtual Training Team (VTT) designs learning experiences that help people change how they think, act and work.
We're looking for a Learning Experience Designer to join our small, friendly and ambitious team.
You'll design learning across a wide range of subjects, from management and people skills to talent development and future-focused workplace capabilities. But there's an important additional dimension to this role.
AI is changing both what people need to learn and how great learning can be designed. We want someone who is excited by that.
We're not looking for someone who simply knows how to use ChatGPT or Copilot. We're looking for a great learning designer who is genuinely curious about AI, already enjoys using it and wants to go deeper. You might already use AI confidently in your work, or you might have had fewer opportunities to explore it professionally but have been experimenting enthusiastically in your own time. What matters is the curiosity, judgement and appetite to learn, alongside excellent learning design skills.
If an emerging AI topic lands on your desk, we'd like your first reaction to be curiosity: I'd love to get into that.
What you'll be doing
You'll take client needs, ideas and sometimes fairly challenging briefs and turn them into thoughtful, practical learning experiences.
You'll:
- Design excellent virtual, face-to-face and blended learning experiences focused on meaningful behaviour change.
- Create comprehensive, intuitive coach notes and delivery guidance so our coaches can deliver your designs brilliantly.
- Work with clients, colleagues and subject-matter experts to understand what people really need - not simply what somebody initially thinks the training should contain.
- Produce clear, engaging and professionally presented participant and coach materials, using excellent written English.
- Design learning about AI, researching rapidly evolving subjects and translating them into practical, credible learning for workplace audiences. This could include Copilot, AI adoption, AI-enabled ways of working and the human and behavioural changes surrounding AI.
- Work in an AI-native way, using AI extensively and intelligently for research, exploration, challenge, ideation, prototyping, analysis and improvement - while knowing when human judgement needs to take over.
- Stay curious about developments in AI, learning, technology and the changing workplace, continually experimenting and bringing new thinking into VTT.
- Manage a varied portfolio of design projects and priorities, producing considered, high-quality work at pace and delivering reliably to demanding deadlines.
- Apply learning science, behavioural science and adult-learning principles in practical ways that improve the learning experience.
- Design for what happens in the room - thinking carefully about timings, instructions, activities, group dynamics, transitions and the differences between virtual and face-to-face delivery.
The person we're looking for
There's no single career path that leads to this job, and we're more interested in what you can do and how you think than whether you've followed a particular route.
You'll probably recognise yourself in much of this:
You start with the human. You're interested in participants - what they already know, what gets in their way and what will genuinely help them behave differently. You know that in a world where people can increasingly find information and answers for themselves, great learning needs to offer something more than they could readily discover on their own.
You're a rapid learner and naturally curious. You enjoy getting your head around unfamiliar subjects, asking good questions and turning complexity into something clear, practical and useful. You're interested in people, learning, technology and how the world of work is changing.
AI genuinely interests you. You experiment with it, learn about it and think critically about what it produces, whether that's in your current job or on your own initiative. You'd be excited about designing learning about AI as well as using AI to improve your own work.
You're an excellent communicator. You can write clearly, naturally and concisely, and make complicated ideas understandable without making them simplistic.
You combine pace with judgement. You can produce thoughtful, intelligent work quickly without either endlessly polishing it or churning out something mediocre.
You take ownership. If something is yours, you get hold of it, solve problems and see it through. You're comfortable working independently without needing somebody constantly looking over your shoulder.
You're positive and constructive. Problems don't paralyse you. Your instinct is to work out what can be done next.
You're a team person. VTT is small enough that occasionally everybody mucks in. You enjoy sharing ideas, collaborating, giving and receiving constructive feedback, and using it to make the work better. If something needs doing, we don't spend too much time debating whose job description it belongs to - we divide it up and crack on.
Working at VTT
We're a fully remote UK team and have been working this way for years. Remote working isn't a temporary arrangement for us; it's simply how VTT works.
That gives people considerable freedom, but successful remote working takes more than owning a laptop. We want someone who genuinely enjoys being part of a remote team, communicates naturally and stays connected with the people around them.
We're also an on-camera company. When we meet one another or our clients on Microsoft Teams, cameras are normally on. We think seeing one another matters to relationships, communication and the sense of community we've built remotely. You'll also sometimes record video walkthroughs and briefings for the coaches delivering your designs, so you'll need to be comfortable communicating naturally on camera.
You can work remotely from anywhere in the UK, provided you have the right to work in the UK. We'll provide the equipment you need, and our everyday working environment includes Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Copilot and Monday.com.
Once a year we bring everybody together in person for our VTT Insight - a chance to spend proper time together away from our screens.
What are we like?
We're professional about our work without being terribly corporate about ourselves.
We're a friendly bunch with lives and interests outside work. Amongst us you'll find puzzling, knitting, crafting and plenty more besides. GIFs are a perfectly legitimate form of workplace communication.
We're a small team, so people matter enormously. We want colleagues who contribute ideas, help one another, challenge constructively and add something of themselves to the team.
We also like learning. Our designers work across a genuine variety of projects, clients and subjects, giving everyone the opportunity to build new skills and broaden their experience. We're experimenting extensively with AI ourselves and thinking deeply about how it is changing work, management and workplace learning. The person joining us won't simply be expected to fit into the way VTT works today. We'd like you to help us improve how VTT works tomorrow.
What you don't necessarily need
We're deliberately not producing an enormous checklist of software packages and qualifications.
You don't need a particular degree.
You don't need to know Monday.com already.
You don't need to know every AI tool available - nobody does, and next month there'll be another twelve anyway.
What matters much more is that you can design excellent learning, think clearly, write well, learn quickly and take ownership. You'll have a genuine appetite for AI and for continually developing your understanding of behaviour change, learning science and what makes learning genuinely effective.
What success could look like
Six months after joining VTT, we'd hope you're a natural part of the team.
You'll understand our clients, systems and standards. You'll have designed excellent learning across different subjects and will be confidently taking ownership of AI-related designs. Clients and coaches will trust the quality of your work.
You'll be using AI and technology not only to improve your learning design but occasionally to show us a better way of doing something.
What you’ll get from us
The freedom and flexibility of a genuinely remote team, with trusted ownership of your work, supportive colleagues and plenty of opportunity to keep developing your craft. You’ll work across varied clients and subjects, including emerging areas of AI, and have a real voice in how we improve what we do.
Alongside your salary, we offer a company performance-related bonus scheme, equipment for your home-working set-up, and annual leave that grows with your service. We’re small enough for your contribution to be noticed and for good ideas to become reality.
