Legal Counsel – Corporate / Investment Funds

Brisbane and Sydney | 3–5 years PAE

  • Excellent opportunity for a corporate lawyer to develop a specialisation in investment funds
  • Work with Australian and international investment managers across a diverse range of investment products
  • Hybrid working arrangements – 3 days in the office and 2 days working from home

We are working with an established and growing financial services business operating in the investment management sector, with a strong Australian presence and an expanding international footprint.

As part of an expansion of its legal team, our client is looking to appoint two Legal Counsel, with one position based in Brisbane and the other in Sydney.

These are particularly interesting opportunities for corporate or commercial lawyers who are keen to develop their careers in investment funds and financial services. While previous funds experience would certainly be welcomed, it is not essential.

The opportunity

Working closely with experienced senior lawyers, you will be involved in the establishment, operation and ongoing management of a broad range of investment funds and products.

Your work will include:

  • Assisting with the establishment and structuring of investment funds and managed investment schemes.
  • Drafting and reviewing fund constitutions, trust deeds, disclosure documents and other investment product documentation.
  • Advising on corporate, commercial and regulatory matters relating to investment products.
  • Working with internal stakeholders and external advisers on new fund launches and changes to existing products.
  • Assisting with the interpretation and application of financial services legislation and regulatory requirements.
  • Supporting the broader legal team on commercial agreements, transactions and other legal matters.

About you

Ideally, you will have around 3–5 years' post-admission experience, gained in a reputable law firm or an in-house legal team.

You might already have experience in investment funds, financial services or managed investment schemes. Equally, you might be a corporate or commercial lawyer with experience in transactions, business structures or commercial agreements who is interested in moving into a more specialised area.

We're particularly interested in lawyers who have strong drafting skills, commercial judgement, an interest in financial markets and the willingness to learn a new area of practice.

Why consider it?

Investment funds is a highly specialised area of law, and lawyers with strong experience in fund establishment, structuring and regulation are sought after in major financial centres around the world.

For someone currently practising in general corporate or commercial law, this is an opportunity to develop a skill set that can open doors well beyond the Australian legal market, including in London, Singapore, Hong Kong and other international financial centres.

You'll receive exposure to experienced funds lawyers, work across a variety of investment products and managers, and develop expertise in an area that is difficult to break into without already having relevant experience.

The business also offers a hybrid working policy of three days in the office and two days working from home, providing flexibility alongside the opportunity to work closely with and learn from experienced colleagues.

It's an opportunity to move in-house with a growing business and build a longer-term career in financial services.

Interested?

If you're a corporate or commercial lawyer who has considered a move in-house, or you're interested in developing a specialisation in investment funds, we'd be very happy to have a confidential discussion.
