KCB is a multidisciplinary engineering, geoscience, and environmental consulting firm grounded in our values of Passion, Integrity, and Excellence. With teams across North America, South America, Australasia, and Europe, we bring together global technical knowledge, local insight, and a shared commitment to solving complex challenges that matter.
Guided by our long-term ambition of Globally Connected Excellence and our purpose of Sustaining the Future, we work alongside our clients to deliver lasting solutions that strengthen resilience and benefit future generations.
Who We’re Looking For
As KCB's global business continues to grow, we are seeking a Legal Counsel to join our in-house legal team. Based in Brisbane, this is a newly created role that will support the legal needs of our Australasia Business Unit, while also contributing to legal initiatives across KCB's broader global business, working closely with and supporting our Director, Legal/General Counsel based in Vancouver, Canada.
This opportunity is ideally suited to a lawyer with 3-5 years' post-admission experience who is looking to broaden their in-house legal career within a global engineering and consulting business.
Reporting to the Director, Legal/General Counsel, you will provide practical legal and commercial advice across a broad range of matters, including contract negotiation, project delivery, governance, compliance, and risk management. You will partner with stakeholders across the common law jurisdictions in which KCB operates and contribute to the ongoing development of KCB's legal frameworks and processes.
This role offers exposure to complex infrastructure, mining, environmental, and energy projects, providing an excellent opportunity to build your commercial legal expertise within a supportive and collaborative global team.
What You Will Do
Provide legal support across the pursuit, negotiation, and delivery stages of construction and engineering projects using a variety of delivery models across public and private markets.
Draft, review, and maintain KCB‑generated client and subcontractor agreements, ensuring best‑practice standards are applied.
Support the business with daily contract reviews and commercial legal advice.
Manage claims and disputes in collaboration with insurers and appointed external legal counsel.
Develop, maintain, and manage contract templates and legal frameworks.
Act as a trusted legal advisor to business units including Power and Transportation, Mining, Environmental and Infrastructure.
Collaborate with the General Counsel, disputes counsel, and risk management team to provide strategic input on claims and disputes.
Monitor legal and contracting trends within the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) industry.
Work collaboratively across the Legal, Compliance and IMS teams to develop and implement policies and processes that improve efficiency and risk management.
Assist in developing and delivering legal and contract‑related training for business units and project teams.
What You Bring
We value the knowledge and experience you have gained to date and are committed to supporting your continued development.
Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited institution.
Admission to practise law in Australia (or equivalent).
Approximately 3-5 years' post-admission experience, gained in private practice, an in-house legal team, or a combination of both.
Strong drafting, negotiation and commercial advisory skills, with the ability to provide practical, solutions-focused legal advice.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships across all levels of the business.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and exercise sound commercial judgement.
Proven ability to identify, assess and manage legal and commercial risk.
A genuine interest in engineering, environmental, infrastructure, or professional consulting services.
What Makes You Stand Out
In addition to the above, you will be particularly well suited to the role if you have:
Experience negotiating and drafting complex agreements within the EPC industry.
Exposure to dispute resolution proceedings or litigation.
Experience or familiarity with legislation in other common‑law jurisdictions where KCB operates, such as Papua New Guinea, Canada, the UK, Ireland, or the USA.
What We Offer
Additional superannuation contribution of 2.5%.
Income protection insurance.
Parental and volunteer leave.
Option to purchase additional leave (up to 15 days).
Novated leasing options.
Hybrid working arrangements.
Social and mental wellbeing initiatives.
Ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
Performance‑based incentives aligned to company, business unit and individual outcomes (where applicable).
If you’re looking for an in‑house role where your legal expertise helps shape innovative, sustainable and technically complex projects, we’d love to hear from you.
