Gen Re currently offers an excellent opportunity for Life Health Pricing Actuary based in our Toronto office located in Toronto's Financial District. The role offers the flexibility to split their work week between a remote location and in-office presence.
Role Description
Reporting to the Regional Chief Actuary
(Canada), the Life / Health Pricing Actuary is an integrated and critical
member of the Pricing and Research team. The role applies technical actuarial
expertise while overseeing the production of quotations for individual and
group Life & Health reinsurance business. The Life / Health Pricing Actuary
contributes to and supports the team's objectives for the acquisition and
management of profitable reinsurance business.
Key
Responsibilities:
- Oversees actuarial functions in support of pricing initiatives including modeling and the preparation of standard and complex quotations and related activities, including basis-setting. Prepares documentation for authorization and sign-off and any related presentation materials for clients, partners and other stakeholders. Interacts with clients in response to pricing queries and resolution of technical issues.
- Interacts with functional partners and colleagues within Segment (US, UK, Ireland, South Africa, US, Australia, NZ & Caribbean) and other global offices to collaborate on bespoke pricing quotations, product offerings or client initiatives, and provides support to other Gen Re offices. Maintains effective working relationships with and provides support to underwriting teams.
- Works collaboratively with Canada Chief Actuary and global colleagues to define Terms of Trade; undertakes relevant research and determines appropriate methodologies for setting general pricing bases for existing and new lines of business.
- Conducts analysis investigations for the purposes of monitoring Gen Re's experiences for quotation purposes. Leads and/or contributes to data collection, analytics and research, as it relates to pricing, product initiatives and client solutions. Performs risk assessments and provides input to product development and process design.
- Leads and/or contributes to strategic initiatives as an integral member of the Pricing and Research team; leverages expertise in actuarial tools and systems (such as AXIS), in data and analytics, machine learning, GLMs, insurtechs and other innovative advancements. Contributes to initiatives that improve operational efficiencies, mitigate risk and align with life and health regulatory frameworks.
- Works collaboratively with the Regional Director to build and maintain relationships with existing clients and to develop new business in Canada. Participates in client meetings, events and marketing initiatives. Maintains a thorough understanding of competitive landscape.
- Shares knowledge and experience with local and international colleagues through the development of thought leadership, in written materials and presentations (eg. Lunch & Learn).
Role Qualifications and Experience
- A qualified actuary (FSA, FCIA) and Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries with at least three years of post-Fellowship experience in an insurance or reinsurance environment in roles involving pricing, product development, product and/or protection insurance.
- Reinsurance pricing experience in Canada, UK and/or US in Individual Life & Health insurance markets is considered an asset.
- Exceptional technical skills in statistical and financial modeling. Proficient with AXIS or similar modeling tools. Having experience with Generalized Additive or Generalized Linear Models structures (GAMs or GLMs) for risk models and product lines, AI-based and machine-learning pricing tools used in pricing and production and experience with data and analytics, techniques, methodologies used in understanding risk and protection would be an asset.
- Group pricing experience with a direct insurer or reinsurer is an asset.
- Demonstrates superior risk management and commercial awareness, strong analytical and critical thinking skills, and a collaborative approach to problem solving, including influencing, negotiating and gaining consensus in a positive, solution-oriented manner.
- Experience in business development, building client-relationships and providing a high standard of care is considered an asset.
- A strong team player, integrates well and collaborates across functions—locally and globally; communicates honestly and constructively, is reliable, and takes the initiative to “roll up their sleeves” and assist when needed. The Life / Health Pricing Actuary role
provides an exciting breadth of scope from both a technical and client facing
perspective. This mandate combines the best of two worlds: 1) the excitement of

you'll be an integral member of the Canadian team - what you do will influence

Salary Range
160,000.00 - 220,000.00 USDThe successful candidate will be paid a competitive compensation package, commensurate with the level, status and responsibilities of the role.
