Manager, Budget and Reporting

OPPORTUNITY

Nationally recognized nonprofit venture philanthropy seeks to hire a manager to lead financial planning and analysis, budgeting, financial reporting, and investment due diligence across the organization.

ORGANIZATION

NewSchools is a venture philanthropy that builds a better education system by connecting people, resources, and ideas. We bridge the gap between those with capital and those with the courage to put that capital to work on the frontlines of K-12 education. We envision an education system that keeps its promise to all students. That’s why we invest in the ideas and energy of education leaders and entrepreneurs who are advancing innovative solutions that expand the definition of what works. There’s a better way to advance education through philanthropy—one that is more equitable, more collaborative, and more courageous–and we’re proving it every day.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Finance team seeks a Manager, Budget and Reporting to lead the planning, execution, and continuous improvement of NewSchools’ organization-wide budgeting, financial reporting, procurement, and financial due diligence on investments. Reporting to the Director of Finance, you will serve as the primary budget and reporting partner to investment team leaders, the Development team, and senior leadership. This role is remote anywhere in the U.S. Travel of up to 10% is required for in-person team meetings, retreats, and conferences.

In this role, you will:

Lead Annual Budgeting, Forecasting, and Financial Planning

  • Lead the annual organization-wide budget development process, preparing templates and training, gathering input from teams, and making recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Maintain and update rolling cash flow forecasts, financial models, and scenario analyses to support strategic decision-making.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly budget vs. actual variance analysis, and lead quarterly budget review sessions with budget owners.
  • Serve as an advisor to budget owners, translating budget data into insights and providing recommendations that inform resourcing and programmatic decisions.
  • Support the Development team with financial reporting packages and build models to integrate new funding proposals into the organizational budget.
  • Continuously improve the budgeting and reporting cycle by streamlining and standardizing workflows, and by reducing manual, spreadsheet-based processes through modernized and automated financial reporting tools.

Drive Finance Strategy, Reporting and Governance Support

  • Partner with the Director of Finance to translate organizational strategy into multi-year financial plans and evaluate trade-offs across portfolio, capacity, and funding scenarios.
  • Provide strategic insight and partner on organizational and team priorities.
  • Synthesize trends across budget, cash, and portfolio data to surface risks and opportunities early and recommend actions to leadership.
  • Contribute to long-term financial sustainability planning, including reserves, liquidity, and capital deployment strategy.
  • Prepare and analyze financial reports and presentations in preparation for quarterly Finance Committee meetings, highlighting key trends, risks, and decisions to support effective governance.
  • Monitor liquidity needs and cash positions across accounts in alignment with organizational requirements, proactively flagging emerging risks and recommending adjustments.
  • Regularly assess finance processes, controls, and tools; recommend and implement improvements that increase accuracy, efficiency, and scalability.

Manage Investment Diligence, Capital Tools, and Procurement and Payment Operations

  • Conduct full financial due diligence for loan applications and strategic capital tools, and refine diligence frameworks as new capital instruments and risk considerations emerge.
  • Maintain organization-wide financial diligence training, support, and templates for grant investments.
  • Oversee contracts and procurement processes, including reviewing initial contract submissions, preparing financial approvals in contract workflows, and managing purchase orders in Intacct.
  • Conduct finance reviews of grant agreements, set up vendor contracts in Salesforce, and support accounts payable and grant payments.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in financial planning and analysis, budgeting, or financial management
  • Strong proficiency in financial modeling, Excel/Google Sheets, and financial systems (e.g., Sage Intacct, Salesforce, Bill.com)
  • Experience utilizing data visualization tools to translate complex financial data into compelling, accessible narratives for non-financial stakeholders
  • Experience performing financial due diligence (analyzing financial statements, identifying financial risks) on grants, investments, or loans preferred
  • Understanding of nonprofit accounting (GAAP) and familiarity with 501(c)(3) compliance preferred
  • Travel up to 10% for in-person team meetings, retreats and conferences

EXPERIENCE YOU BRING

  • Ability to influence without authority and communicate technical financial concepts clearly to non-financial stakeholders
  • Designing and maintaining systems and routines that capture, organize and share learning
  • Owning multiple workstreams from inception through completion with attention to detail and strong organization
  • Collaborating with a wide range of stakeholders to achieve ambitious goals
  • Creating processes and leading conversations that keep work moving across teams
  • Leading reflection and improvement cycles for workstreams, using data and documented learning to inform decisions and improve team effectiveness

COMPENSATION

A competitive compensation package including base salary, performance bonus, and complete benefits is available. The starting salary range for this position is $110,000 to $140,000 with the potential for an annual bonus of up to 5%. Final salary will be determined based on experience level and qualification
