POSITION OVERVIEW:

La Familia is seeking a driven, accomplished grant-writing professional and emerging institutional fundraising leader to help grow the resources behind essential community services. The Manager of Institutional Giving is a hands-on writer, proactive strategist, and service-minded people manager. Reporting to the Vice President of Development & Strategy, this person will identify and pursue high-value government and foundation funding opportunities, lead persuasive and technically excellent proposals, coach a growing team, and build the systems and relationships needed for sustained institutional revenue. This is an opportunity to take meaningful ownership, shape a developing institutional giving function, and grow as a leader as the department evolves. This role will uphold and champion the agency’s mission, vision, and values and contribute to a collaborative and inclusive work culture.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Institutional Giving Strategy & Portfolio Leadership

  • In partnership with the Vice President, translate La Familia’s strategic plan, program priorities, and community needs into an annual and multi-year institutional giving plan with a prioritized pipeline, realistic revenue goals, prospecting targets, proposal milestones, and measurable outcomes.
  • Accountable for achieving assigned institutional fundraising goals, including proposal volume, pipeline growth, renewal rates, and annual funding revenue targets.
  • Personally drive—and guide the team’s—continuous, proactive discovery and qualification of government RFPs, NOFOs, bids, renewals, and competitive grants, alongside private foundation prospects. Bring forward well-researched opportunities before deadlines become urgent.
  • Develop and manage a balanced institutional funder portfolio, with intentional growth of private foundation funding alongside strategic public funding.
  • Develop cultivation and solicitation strategies for private foundations, including prospect segmentation, engagement planning, proposal scheduling, and renewal strategies.
  • Lead go/no-go analysis for funding opportunities, considering strategic alignment, revenue potential, indirect cost recovery, implementation feasibility, compliance burden, sustainability, and organizational capacity.
  • Build relationships with funders and public-sector partners and prepare executive leaders for funder meetings and engagement.
  • Monitor legislative, policy, procurement, and philanthropic trends that may impact funding opportunities, organizational sustainability, or strategic growth initiatives.

Complex Proposal Leadership

  • Act as a highly skilled, hands-on lead grant writer for priority and complex government and private foundation proposals. Write, substantially revise, and edit compelling, accurate narratives that clearly articulate community needs, program design, evidence, impact, and organizational capacity; model excellent writing for the team.
  • Own the quality and execution of priority submissions: analyze complex solicitation requirements; shape proposal strategy and win themes; develop writing plans and timelines; assign responsibilities; lead drafting, review, and editing; and ensure responsive, complete, on-time submissions.
  • Facilitate cross-functional proposal development with program, Finance, clinical, compliance, data, and executive partners.
  • Partner with Finance on proposal budgets and financial assumptions and ensure consistency between program design, narrative, staffing, deliverables, and budget.
  • Manage external grant-writing contractors when used for capacity or specialized expertise.

Grant Infrastructure, Calendar, & Compliance

  • Build and maintain a centralized institutional funding calendar covering prospects, submissions, reports, renewals, and key funder touchpoints.
  • Establish grant-development SOPs, templates, RACI structures, file standards, and tracking systems that reduce compressed timelines and missed opportunities.
  • Interpret award and solicitation requirements early; coordinate a clear handoff to Finance, Operations, and other designated owners for post-award fiscal, programmatic, contractual, and compliance responsibilities, without assuming ownership of those functions.
  • Track and communicate clear performance measures—including qualified prospects, pipeline value, submissions, awards, win rates, renewals, and deadlines—and use results to adjust prospecting and proposal strategy.
  • Conduct debriefs for awarded and declined proposals; identify trends, evaluator feedback, and process improvements to strengthen future funding competitiveness.
  • Maintain accurate institutional funding records and ensure information is accessible rather than dependent on individual staff systems.
  • Develop and implement stewardship and engagement strategies that strengthen institutional funder relationships, increase renewal rates, and position the Agency for future funding opportunities.
  • Lead organizational grant readiness efforts by maintaining current boilerplate language, organizational documents, certifications, registrations, program descriptions, and supporting materials required for timely proposal submission.

Team Leadership & Cross-Departmental Alignment

  • Practice service-inspired management: support staff success through clear priorities, accessible guidance, coaching, timely feedback, thoughtful delegation, removal of obstacles, and fair accountability. Foster high standards without sacrificing trust, collaboration, or professional growth.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop Institutional Giving Specialist(s); review work products, strengthen research and writing skills, help manage workloads, and create opportunities for staff to take increasing ownership. Coordinate external grant-writing support when needed.
  • Partner with Finance on fiscal inputs and stewardship, Operations on implementation and outcomes, and Compliance/Data on compliance and reporting systems.
  • Protect institutional fundraising capacity by keeping the team focused on revenue-generating and funder-facing work rather than unrelated administrative, operational, or community-event responsibilities.

Staff Supervision

  • Provide day-to-day supervision, guidance, and support to assigned staff.
  • Set clear expectations, delegate tasks effectively, and monitor staff performance.
  • Foster a positive, respectful, and inclusive work environment aligned with organizational values.
  • Conduct regular team meetings, check-ins, and coaching sessions.
  • Address performance concerns promptly, documenting and escalating issues when necessary.
  • Support professional development by identifying training needs and opportunities for growth.

Contract Management

  • Serve as a liaison with funders regarding programmatic and operational issues.
  • Attend all funder-required meetings, events, and trainings.
  • Ensure delivery of program elements in compliance with contract language.
  • Submit all required documents and reports by the deadlines.
  • Collaborate with La Familia Administration and the Supervisor to ensure accurate and appropriate contract expenditures.

Program & Coverage Responsibilities

  • Ensure program operations continue without interruption by providing coverage for essential duties when positions are vacant.
  • Temporarily fill in unstaffed roles until the position is filled.
  • Prioritize workload and allocate resources to maintain service delivery during staffing gaps.
  • Communicate staffing needs and operational impacts to leadership promptly.

Timekeeping & Attendance Responsibilities

  • Complete assigned work on or before deadlines in accordance with directives, policies, standards, and prescribed procedures.
  • Ensure staff complies with established work schedules, attendance, and punctuality requirements.
  • Monitor and approve employee timecards, including daily clock-in/out, breaks, overtime, and leave.
  • Ensure employees take required meal and rest breaks in compliance with labor laws and agency policy.
  • Submit approvals on time to support accurate payroll processing.
  • Investigate and resolve timesheet discrepancies and escalate unresolved issues to HR/Payroll.
  • Enforce organizational policies, procedures, and compliance with applicable labor laws.

Other

  • Attend training and participate in events relevant to key responsibilities.
  • Track and regularly report on key metrics for the responsible function areas.
  • Leads and collaborates on projects supporting Agency objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and directly relevant experience; advanced education in nonprofit management, public administration, public health, communications, or a related field welcomed.
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible nonprofit grant development or institutional fundraising experience, with substantial personal authorship of successful government and/or foundation proposals.
