Position Summary:
We are seeking a Senior Manager – Platform Engineering & SRE to lead the teams that build and run the cloud platforms our engineers rely on every day. This role owns the Azure cloud platform, the developer experience (DevX) and engineering enablement agenda, and the observability and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practice for Azure application workloads, with the goal of improving engineering efficiency, quality, and delivery speed across the organization.
The Senior Manager will lead three sub-teams, Cloud Platform, Developer Experience (DevX), and SRE & Observability, through their leads. The role treats the platform as a product and application engineering teams as its customers, and works closely with Engineering Directors, Application Engineering, Architecture, Security, Data/AI, and business stakeholders to deliver secure, reliable, self-service capabilities that make the right way of building software the easiest way.
This position is expected to operate with a higher level of ownership than an Engineering Manager and to actively support Director-level responsibilities across platform strategy, roadmap planning, engineering governance, talent development, and cross-functional stakeholder alignment.
Roles & Responsibilities
Platform Strategy & Technical Leadership
- Define and own the platform engineering vision, roadmap, and operating model, aligned with enterprise cloud strategy and engineering priorities.
- Run the platform as a product: understand the needs of application engineering teams, prioritize the backlog based on impact, publish a clear service catalog, and drive adoption.
- Provide technical direction across platform architecture, reusable components, engineering standards, and design reviews, and make build vs. buy vs. adopt decisions for tooling.
- Ensure platform capabilities are scalable, secure, reliable, cost-efficient, and maintainable, and aligned with cloud-native, API-first, and event-driven practices.
- Partner with Architecture and Security to set secure-by-default patterns and reference architectures for application teams.
- Define and meet SLOs for platform services, holding the platform to the same reliability standards it sets for application teams
Cloud Platform & Governance
- Lead the Azure landing zone and subscription decomposition initiatives, including subscription strategy, resource organization, environment separation, RBAC, policy, governance, and secure connectivity.
- Drive Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or equivalent) and a library of reusable, versioned modules for identity, compute, messaging, monitoring, security, and core networking.
- Enable self-service provisioning of cloud workloads with built-in guardrails, so application teams can move quickly without compromising governance.
- Establish policy-as-code, tagging, secrets management, and compliance guardrails across Azure environments.
- Partner with Finance and engineering leadership on cloud cost visibility, optimization, and accountability (FinOps practices).
Developer Experience & Engineering Excellence
- Lead the DevX and engineering excellence agenda: golden paths, reusable engineering templates, standardized CI/CD pipeline patterns (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions or similar), automated quality gates, and self-service workflows.
- Introduce and drive adoption of best engineering practices and the right tools across teams, with clear documentation, onboarding, and enablement.
- Define and track developer productivity and delivery metrics (for example lead time, deployment frequency, change failure rate, build times, onboarding time, and developer satisfaction) and use them to guide improvements.
- Enable engineering teams to adopt approved AI-assisted engineering tools and automation patterns responsibly, to improve productivity, code quality, and delivery efficiency.
- Measure and drive platform/tool adoption by gathering feedback from application teams and continuously improving the platform experience.
Observability & Site Reliability Engineering (SRE)
- Own the SRE strategy, standards, and tooling for Azure application workloads, while application teams retain ownership of on-call and day-to-day operations for their services.
- Define and roll out observability standards covering logging, metrics, distributed tracing, dashboards, and alerting, built into reusable deployment templates.
- Establish SLI/SLO/SLA frameworks, error budgets, and reliability reviews, and coach application teams to adopt them.
- Define incident management, post-incident review, and problem management practices, and use incident trends to drive reliability improvements, automation, and reduction of operational toil.
- Drive operational readiness through production readiness reviews, resilience and capacity practices, and disaster recovery standards.
- Provide a reliable, well-supported observability platform and consult with application teams on troubleshooting and performance issues when needed.
People Leadership & Talent Development
- Manage and develop the Cloud Platform, DevX, and SRE & Observability leads, along with senior engineers and high-performing platform engineering teams.
- Build a culture of ownership, accountability, technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous learning.
- Own hiring, onboarding, performance management, career development, succession planning, and leadership development for platform engineering talent, including scaling the team as the platform grows.
- Set clear goals and expectations, provide regular feedback, and manage performance fairly and consistently.
- Coach leads and technical leaders to improve execution rigor, stakeholder communication, engineering judgment, and team effectiveness.
- Identify capability gaps in cloud, automation, SRE, and DevX skills and create development plans to build team maturity.
Stakeholder Collaboration & Strategic Support
- Partner closely with Application Engineering, Architecture, Security, Data/AI, Product, and business stakeholders to align platform priorities and execution plans.
- Support Engineering Directors in translating strategic priorities into actionable platform roadmaps and execution plans.
- Communicate progress, risks, dependencies, trade-offs, and platform adoption and reliability metrics clearly to senior engineering and business leadership.
- Act as a bridge between strategy and execution, ensuring teams understand business context, technical priorities, and expected outcomes.
- Contribute to engineering governance, operating rhythms, planning reviews, and cross-team alignment forums.
Required Skills:
- 12+ years of experience in software engineering, cloud infrastructure, DevOps, or platform engineering.
- 6+ years of experience leading engineering teams, preferably including leading leads/managers across multiple teams or sub-teams.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in platform engineering, cloud infrastructure, DevOps, or SRE, with the technical depth to review designs and guide technical decisions.
- Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure (or a similar cloud platform), including PaaS services, cloud-native application hosting, cloud networking, secure connectivity, identity, and operational practices.
- Strong understanding of cloud governance and secure-by-default platform patterns, including landing zones, RBAC, policy as code, tagging, secrets management, compliance, and guardrails.
- Strong experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or similar) and building reusable, versioned modules.
- Experience building and scaling self-service platform capabilities, golden paths, reusable templates, and standardized engineering patterns, with demonstrated platform adoption across engineering teams.
- Hands-on understanding of CI/CD platforms (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions or similar), reusable pipeline templates, automated quality gates, and release management.
- Strong understanding of observability and SRE practices, including logging, metrics, tracing, alerting, SLI/SLO/SLA and error budgets, incident management, and production troubleshooting.
- Good understanding of distributed systems and event-driven architectures.
- Experience using engineering and DevX metrics to drive improvements in productivity, quality, and delivery speed.
- Exposure to AI-assisted engineering tools and automation to improve developer productivity and code quality.
- Strong people leadership skills with demonstrated ability to coach leads and managers, manage performance, develop talent, and build high-performing teams.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence across engineering, security, architecture, product, and business teams.
Preferred Skills:
- Cloud certifications such as Azure Administrator, Azure Solutions Architect, or Azure DevOps Engineer Expert.
- Experience with FinOps and cloud cost optimization.
- Experience in healthcare or other regulated industries (HIPAA, SOC 2 or similar).
- Experience building or running an internal developer platform or developer portal.
