CIBC U.S. Middle Market Investment Banking advises private equity sponsors, entrepreneurs, and publicly traded companies on mergers and acquisitions, private debt and equity financings, recapitalizations, and other transactions with enterprise values of up to $500 million.


As Managing Director, you will help expand CIBC’s U.S. Middle Market Investment Banking’s vertical market expertise. . You will originate and execute M&A and financing engagements, deepen senior client, and sponsor relationships, shape vertical market strategy, and develop high-performing deal teams. The successful candidate will bring established relationships and deep expertise in one or more of the following sectors: Business Services, Consumer; Healthcare Products; or Software and Technology. Collaborating closely with colleagues across Capital Markets and CIBC Bank USA, you will convert market insight into differentiated advice, new mandates, and durable client relationships.


How You will Succeed

  • Drive business development and revenue growth. Originate and convert new opportunities, secure fee-paying engagements, build a sustainable pipeline, and expand relationships with private equity sponsors, entrepreneurs, companies, and centers of influence in the relevant vertical market.
  • Lead Vertical Market Strategy. Anticipate client needs, translate industry, and market trends into actionable advice, produce thought leadership that reinforces CIBC’s vertical market expertise, and represent the firm in relevant market and community activities.
  • Oversee transaction execution. Lead vertical market M&A and financing mandates from pitch through closing, including client onboarding and AML clearance, financial modeling and analysis, recommendations, deal-team communication, and coordination with all stakeholdres.
  • Mobilize the CIBC platform. Build strong internal partnerships with product and industry experts across Capital Markets and CIBC Bank USA and maintain accurate business-development and transaction activity in Salesforce.
  • Build and develop talent. Create a high-performing and inclusive team by setting clear direction, allocating responsibilities effectively, and providing Executive Directors, Directors, Associates, and Analysts with active mentorship, coaching, teaching, and timely feedback.
  • Uphold governance and professional standards. Ensure that all advice, recommendations, and execution activities comply with applicable laws, regulations, CIBC policies, and professional standards.

What You Bring

  • Senior investment banking experience. At least 10 years of relevant experience, including significant responsibility for transaction origination, execution, client coverage, and team leadership at the Managing Director or equivalent level.
  • Middle-market M&A expertise. Deep knowledge of middle-market mergers and acquisitions, transaction processes, valuation, financial analysis, and relevant market dynamics.
  • Sector credibility. Established relationships and demonstrated expertise in one or more of the vertical markets specified above.
  • Commercial and strategic judgment. A record of generating ideas, solving complex client challenges, winning mandates, and delivering practical recommendations.
  • Executive communication and influence. Ability to communicate complex financial and strategic recommendations clearly and persuasively to senior executives, boards, investors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Relationship leadership. Demonstrated ability to build, expand, and leverage senior-level client, sponsor, advisor, and internal business-partner relationships.
  • Leadership under pressure. Proven ability to set priorities, exercise sound judgment, and lead teams effectively in a demanding, fluid environment with competing deadlines.
  • Professional integrity. A strong reputation for ethics, accountability, open communication, collaboration, and sound stewardship of client and firm interests.

At CIBC, we offer a competitive total rewards package. This role has an expected salary of $300,000 for the market based on experience, qualifications, and location of the position. The successful candidate may be eligible to participate in the relevant business unit’s incentive compensation plan, which may also include a discretionary bonus component.
