Show job description

Local Color is a nonprofit, artist-powered workforce and resource organization supporting creative work and communities across the South Bay. We win grants and we're hired by companies, schools, and civic partners. We use that funding to hire vetted local creatives for paid work, to fund community art, and to run affordable studios, galleries, and spaces, all professionally managed end to end. Our programs span Creative Services, Arts Education, Creative Spaces, and Creative Experiences, and our annual 31 Skulls fundraiser is in its seventh year.

About the Role

The Marketing and Content Manager runs Local Color's day-to-day marketing, full time. You'll take a content strategy that already exists (personas, pillars, voice and tone, the whole playbook) and own everything between the plan and the published post: intake, timelines, assets, content, review cycles, and channel management.

Our Marketing Director is fractional and focused on strategy, brand direction, and fundraising campaigns. This role is the steady, full-time owner of execution. You'll plan work far enough ahead that review fits on the calendar, keep program teams supplying what marketing needs, and keep institutional knowledge in one place as interns and contractors rotate through.

40 hours per week, W-2, hourly

$30 to $35 per hour (non-exempt, full-time position)

Benefits for full-time staff include:

  • 24/7 access to Local Color's artist studio workspaces during your employment
  • Healthcare Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage.
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • Monthly phone stipend to support work-related communication

Schedule & Location:

  • Our Marketing Director has limited working hours, so occasional meetings between 5 and 7 pm are helpful, and project plans need to account for review time. Some evenings and event nights are part of the job
  • Based in the South Bay, with regular in-person time at Big Arts in downtown San José for shoots, events, and team meetings

Our Marketing Team

Marketing at Local Color is a small team, and this role is its center:

  • Marketing Director (fractional): Overarching annual and quarterly strategies, brand positioning, brand direction, strategic campaign planning, and final review
  • This role: Execution, content, basic graphic design, project management, and program coordination
  • Content Creation Intern(s): Support content creation, working under and alongside this role
  • Contractors: Our vetted photographers, videographers, and graphic designer, who you'll brief and coordinate

You'd be the connective tissue between strategy and output, and between marketing and every program team. Our interns rotate, so you're the consistent presence who shares in training them, shapes their priorities, and keeps things moving across transitions.

A Note on How We Work

We're a nonprofit, and we're scrappy. We do what we can with what we have, and growth requires a balancing act. Quick pivots and resourcefulness are part of the job.

Nonprofit marketing also works differently from agency or brand work. Program details, photos, and copy don't always arrive ready to go, so part of this job is building and maintaining the systems that get them to you: a request form people use, one place for program info, and a shared home for assets. We're looking for someone who brings grace, resourcefulness, and a love for the arts and for marketing.

What You'll Do

Content and channels, every week and month:

  • 3 or more social posts per week on Instagram, auto-crossposted to Facebook, scaling to near daily during big fundraising and event campaigns
  • 1 post a week crossposted to LinkedIn with its own curated caption. This is an area we’d like to develop more. LinkedIn experience is a plus.
  • Instagram community management: stories, resharing partner and artist posts, commenting, and replying
  • Minimal external creator / influencer coordination, but experience in this area is a bonus.
  • 2 emails per month to our supporter list, plus additional campaign emails as needed
  • Short-form video: film artist and program interviews and edit reels on your own.
  • Occasionally create and star in your own content: plan it, appear on camera, record the voiceover, and edit it yourself
  • Occasional larger projects require working with our contracted videographers and editors on bigger shoots
  • Basic graphic design in Canva for social posts, emails, and web flyers

Project management and intake:

  • Own the marketing calendar and work-back schedules, with time built in for review rounds with the director, and sometimes others, before every go-live date
  • Run marketing intake: make sure requests come through the request form with copy, details, and assets attached and enough lead time, and follow up when they don't
  • Join a weekly meetings with the program managers for Creative Services, Arts Education, Creative Spaces, and Creative Experiences
  • Keep projects, timelines, and requests moving in Google Workspace, ClickUp, and Slack

Asset management:

  • Maintain and organize one shared home for photos, video, logos, and brand files, so nobody hunts for the same file twice
  • Collect assets from program teams, artists, partners, and contractors, and track what's still missing. Proactively reach out to collect missing items.
  • Size and adapt assets for each platform: Instagram, email, web, ticketing and giving pages, partner channels, signage, and print

Fundraising and event marketing:

  • Run marketing for 31 Skulls and other fundraising campaigns, from ticket pushes to sponsor and in-kind partner recognition
  • Write and coordinate event signage and printed materials with our graphic designer
  • Bring ideas for social fundraising: art parties, mural sponsorships, and campaigns we haven't dreamed up yet

Documentation:

  • Take in documentation requests from programs, clients, and grantors, and get them scheduled
  • Coordinate shoots with our contracted photographers and videographers
  • Manage the review cycle: collect feedback, route revisions, and keep things moving

Web, press, and reporting:

  • Make regular website updates, several a month, coordinating with staff who support the site
  • Write and pitch press releases, and coordinate with media and partner outlets
  • Update our social media metrics template monthly, and bring ideas to improve it

Interns:

  • Support with training, mentoring, reviewing and setting priorities for our Content Creation Intern(s), and own posting and channel management

As budget allows, down the road:

  • Paid ads on LinkedIn, Google, and Meta
  • A website refresh focused on clearer navigation
  • A dedicated scheduling or metrics tool, if the budget and features make sense

What We're Looking For

We’re looking for someone who wants to make fun, engaging and creative content. Not just the same ol' stuff AI spits out. We’re not categorically opposed to AI. It’s a super helpful tool! But the work, with AI or not, has to be driven by a desire to draw people in: to connect, entertain, teach and inspire in strategic, unique and memorable ways.

  • A marketing background with real, hands-on social media and content experience
  • Nonprofit, arts, or community organization experience, strong bonus
  • Project management skills: you build timelines backward from launch dates and plan review time in, without being asked
  • The ability to take a strategy document and independently turn it into unique, on brand, engaging, scheduled, published content
  • Openness to working with AI tools to support efficiency, not to replace human skill or judgment
  • Strong storytelling instincts and comfort writing in a warm, plain-spoken voice
  • Comfort shooting, editing, doing VO and occasionally starring in short-form video on a phone or basic kit
  • Basic graphic design skills for social media, email, and web
  • A proactive, in-house mindset: you go get the info and assets you need from busy teammates rather than waiting for work to arrive packaged
  • A sharp eye for brand consistency, and the judgment to know what's ready to go versus what needs another pass
  • Comfort in Canva, Squarespace, Google Workspace, ClickUp, and Slack
  • Experience mentoring an intern or junior team member is a plus
  • Fundraising or event marketing experience is a plus
  • Available for occasional evenings and event nights, especially during fundraising season
