About Fittes
At Fittes, we’re on a mission to make the mundane exciting. We elevate unloved products with fresh design, bringing a new-school approach to an old-school industry. We’re a dynamic, female-owned-and-led product design company in Toronto experiencing exciting growth. We’re a team of disruptors driven by ambition, creativity, and accountability.
Collaboration, humility, and intentionality define our work environment, and our team’s results speak for themselves.
Curious about our work? We started with the first modular air register designed to customize to any surface, and have since expanded into multiple product categories. We’re a team focused on building something extraordinary and long-lasting, for both our customers and our people. See more on our Instagram, Glassdoor and website!
The Opportunity
This is a hands-on, high-ownership co-op for an engineering student who wants to help ship real products—not shadow someone else’s.
Our Product team is launching new products and expanding existing lines faster than our current capacity allows. You’ll report to our Product Engineer and become the person who keeps launches moving: updating SolidWorks models and drawings, validating manufacturing samples, building test fixtures and running tests, and preparing the production packages our manufacturers build from. The work splits roughly 50/50 between manufacturing support and product development, and the balance shifts with the launch calendar.
Within your first month, you’ll be turning around drawing updates at the same pace as our team. By the end of your term, you’ll have tangible projects you can point to: a problem you found, a solution you tested, and results you quantified.
This is an execution-first role. Priorities move quickly, and you’ll often carry more than one urgent deliverable at a time. We need someone who flags conflicts early and brings options, not someone who waits to be told what’s next.
Learning Objectives:
- Sharpen your SolidWorks skills to produce scalable, production-ready models and drawings
- Plan and run product tests with controlled variables, then present your results and a recommendation
- Get real-world design for manufacturing experience with sheet metal and injection-molded products
- Take part in the product development pipeline, from a net-new launch or revitalization through to production
- Build technical documentation skills across standards, quality documentation and SR&ED records
- Understand the commercial side and business impact of engineering decisions on consumer products
- Grow toward your own career goals, with a manager invested in getting you there
What you’ll be doing:
Manufacturing & Production Support [40%]
- Update SolidWorks models and drawings accurately and on deadline
- Export and deliver production packages on time and error-free
- Validate manufacturing samples against Fittes’ drawings and quality control metrics
- Review and update product assets like dimension sheets, file exports and quality documentation
- Support quality and engineering specification documentation for internal and external partners
- Keep your launch tasks on track and flag slips the moment you see them
Product Development & Testing [30%]
- Research the industry and regulatory standards our products must meet, and propose the best test methods to make sure they pass before launch
- Help design and build test fixtures, install products for testing, and execute test plans with support from your manager
- Complete dimension verifications and prototype assessments
- Operate and maintain our 3D printer for prototypes and design support
- Research gaps in our assortment and the competitive landscape to inform product requirements
Team Building & Cross-Department Support [10%]
- Answer technical questions from teams like Brand and CX, and understand how product decisions affect them
- Know how the Product team is tracking against business goals
- Bring information to your manager with a clear point of view, so decisions move faster
- Own your school co-op requirements and keep them on track
Standardization & Documentation [10%]
- Follow and help document model standards, and flag models that don’t meet them
- Help build quality-control standards that make sample verification repeatable
- Log development work weekly for SR&ED
Leadership + Brand + Values [10%]
- Bring every issue with at least two options and a recommendation
- Keep moving through shifting priorities and uncertainty
- Over-communicate, especially about capacity—nothing left unsaid
- Fail forward: surface mistakes early and openly
- Take feedback well and act on it
You’re a good fit if you:
- Are a 4th or 5th year Mechanical, Manufacturing or Industrial Engineering co-op student available January to August 2027 (local 3rd-year students are encouraged to apply)
- Are confident in SolidWorks and have created and read mechanical drawings in a work term, design team or project
- Have run tests or lab experiments and documented results with controlled variables
- Like hands-on work: hand tools, prototypes, and getting into the lab
- Can manage more than one priority against real deadlines, and speak up early when something has to give
- Are curious, ask “why,” and aren’t overly attached to your first idea
Bonus points:
- Hands-on work terms in automotive, robotics or manufacturing
- Student design team experience (e.g., Formula SAE)
- Exposure to sheet metal or injection molding
- GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, FEA, DFMEA or quality documentation
Tech stack
- SolidWorks (must-have)
- 3D printing
- Google Suite
Your Superpowers:
- Attention to detail
- Quality focus
- Initiative
- Adaptability
- Problem solving
- Collaboration
- Testing
