Media and Communications Adviser

At Slater and Gordon, purpose and progress go hand in hand. We're a place for people who want to do meaningful work and make a real impact.
For more than 90 years, we've stood beside people taking on systems, institutions and opponents far bigger than themselves. As a leading personal injury and class actions firm, we use the law to open up access to justice and fight for what's fair, because justice matters.

This isn't a place for standing still. It's a place to do great work, grow your capabilities and be part of something bigger than yourself.

The opportunity

We are looking for a Media and Communications Adviser to join our Corporate Affairs team in Melbourne.

This role offers an opportunity to build understanding of Slater and Gordon, the clients we act for and the difference our people make. You will work across media relations, client storytelling, content and awards, supporting proactive and reactive media across the firm's practice areas.

You will be trusted with meaningful responsibility, developing accurate, client-centred stories and recognition that strengthens our brand and helps more people understand their rights and how to access justice.

Why join us

We offer accessible, world-class legal services to people from all backgrounds and socioeconomic circumstances, simplifying the legal process and supporting clients at every step.

Here you are exposed to varied and interesting work, with the opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of everyday people. You will join teams where support, mentoring and collaboration are part of how things get done, in a culture that is professional, but still human.
At Slater and Gordon, you work towards powerful outcomes every day, and have the opportunity to:
  • Do work that matters for real people – tell stories that highlight meaningful client outcomes and help people understand their rights.
  • Build a dynamic career – develop broad experience across media relations, storytelling, awards, content, issues support and reporting.
  • Bring your whole self to work – contribute to stronger teams built on compassion, respect and low-ego collaboration.
Our commitment to offering a progressive career includes:
  • Genuine hybrid working and flexibility to support different life stages and needs.
  • Structured learning and professional development.
  • Recognition of high performance, with opportunities to grow your career.
  • Outstanding benefits including paid shutdown leave, 26 weeks of paid parental leave, additional long service leave, and ongoing wellbeing and development initiatives.

What we are looking for

You are someone who:
  • Has strong news sense and a track record of securing media coverage.
  • Can translate legal or technical information into plain English quickly and accurately.
  • Is motivated by client impact and social justice, and wants to help people understand their rights.
  • Communicates clearly and builds strong relationships with journalists, colleagues, lawyers and leaders.
  • Brings sound judgement and empathy when handling client stories and confidential information.
  • Is highly organised and able to coordinate monitoring, distribution and reporting processes.
  • Is curious about how AI can improve communications and works responsibly within privacy and confidentiality requirements.

What you will bring

You will bring:
  • A tertiary qualification in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or a related discipline.
  • At least three years' experience in media relations, communications or journalism, in-house, agency or newsroom.
  • Experience preparing media releases, pitches, statements, briefing notes or similar content.
  • Experience coordinating media monitoring, distribution or reporting processes.
  • Experience preparing award submissions or similar persuasive writing will be viewed favourably.
  • Experience with Queensland or regional media, or in a regulated sector such as legal, health or financial services, will be viewed favourably.
  • Working knowledge of content, monitoring and distribution tools.
