Job Title: MEP Engineer
Job Description
The MEP Engineer designs mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and related building systems for multi-family and mixed-use mid- and high-rise buildings, retail fit-outs, and preservation rehabilitation projects. This role combines hands-on design work with project coordination, team leadership, and direct client and contractor interaction. You will work across all MEP disciplines, develop construction documents using AutoCAD and Revit, and help ensure that building systems are efficient, code-compliant, and constructible.
Responsibilities
- Design mechanical, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and fire protection systems for multi-family and mixed-use buildings, retail fit-outs, and preservation rehabilitation projects in accordance with applicable design standards, engineering principles, and building codes.
- Read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings, technical documentation, schematics, building codes, and computer-generated reports with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Develop and coordinate MEP construction documents using AutoCAD and Revit, ensuring that drawings are clear, complete, and aligned with project requirements.
- Manage and mentor junior engineers and drafters, delegate tasks effectively, and oversee their work to ensure that project deliverables are completed accurately and on schedule.
- Communicate design intent clearly to contractors, clients, and project team members to define project scope, discuss feasibility, and resolve design issues.
- Collaborate closely with architectural, structural, and civil teams to coordinate building systems and ensure feasibility, constructability, and integration of all disciplines.
- Coordinate with equipment vendors to communicate design requirements and obtain appropriate basis-of-design equipment selections.
- Perform or support heating and cooling load calculations using principles of heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics to size and select mechanical systems.
- Participate in project job site visits during construction to monitor progress, observe installed conditions, and verify conformance with design documents, owner expectations, and building codes.
- Attend project meetings with owners, clients, and consultants to discuss design progress, address technical questions, and support decision-making.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and maintain accountability for meeting deadlines and quality standards.
- Contribute to a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment by sharing ideas, providing feedback, and supporting continuous improvement of design processes and standards.
- Take ownership of assigned projects and tasks, proactively identify potential issues, and propose practical, code-compliant solutions.
- Support the continued development and implementation of Revit and other design tools within the MEP team.
Essential Skills
- 15 years of experience in the design of mechanical, electrical, and/or plumbing systems for buildings.
- Hands-on experience with Autodesk AutoCAD for producing and modifying engineering drawings and construction documents.
- Hands-on experience with Autodesk Revit for building information modeling and coordination of MEP systems.
- Practical experience in MEP engineering within at least one discipline (mechanical, electrical, or plumbing), with strong design capabilities in that trade.
- Experience creating or working with construction documents, riser diagrams, and detailed MEP drawings.
- Familiarity with HVAC design, including heating and cooling load calculations and application of heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics principles.
- Knowledge of building codes, standards, structures, construction materials, and specifications relevant to MEP systems.
- Experience coordinating mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and fire protection systems with other building disciplines.
- Demonstrated ability to manage or lead junior staff and drafters, including task delegation and quality review of their work.
- Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently while meeting deadlines and maintaining high-quality deliverables.
- General software and computer proficiency, with the ability to learn new tools quickly.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to convey technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated interest in building systems and a strong desire to deepen technical expertise across multiple MEP disciplines.
