Middleware Administrator (Information Systems Specialist 7)

Job Description:

The Oregon Department of Justice (DOJ), Information Services Section, is hiring an Information Services Specialist 7 (Middleware Administrator) to support our IT Operations Team. This senior technical role provides expert engineering, administration, and lifecycle leadership for DOJ’s enterprise middleware platforms—enabling secure, reliable, high‑performance services that support critical applications used statewide.

This position ensures DOJ staff, partners, and the public receive a stable and modern technology experience by architecting and operating the application delivery, integration, authentication, and data‑exchange platforms that our mission depends on.

This role is a hybrid of remote work and in-office work. Remote work is embraced to the fullest extent possible without interfering with business. There is an expectation of reporting to the Salem office occasionally for scheduled team meetings. The finalist must reside in the state of Oregon by the time of appointment. Apply today!

Primary Job Duties (In Part)

  • Middleware Customer Assistance: Respond to and resolve complex middleware incidents affecting mission‑critical applications and integrations. Diagnose outages, performance issues, and transaction failures across application servers, integration tiers, web gateways, APIs (Application Programming Interface), file‑transfer platforms, and authentication/ Single sign-on (SSO) services. Communicate impacts, document actions, and ensure timely, risk‑aware restoration of services supporting statewide program operations.
  • Middleware Operations, Reliability & Compliance Management: Administer middleware environments across development, test, and production. Coordinate patching, secrets management, certificates, baseline configurations, observability, monitoring, and alerting. Lead middleware change management, enforce documentation standards, and ensure compliance with DOJ and federal/state requirements including IRS 1075, Federal Bureau of Investigation's Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS), and Social Security Administration (SSA) regulations.
  • Middleware Platform Engineering & Integration Architecture: Design and implement modern middleware capabilities that support secure, scalable application delivery. Establish engineering standards for API management, application runtimes, integration patterns, workload orchestration, and gateway services. Lead complex multi‑vendor or multi‑site deployments, migrations, and proofs of concept. Create runbooks, integration contracts, and CI/CD patterns to ensure reliable and repeatable deployments.
  • Middleware Security & Data Protection: Embed security‑by‑design throughout the middleware stack. Validate configurations involving Federal Tax Information (FTI), Personally Identifiable Information (PII), and other regulated data. Ensure least privilege, segmentation, encryption, secure certificates, secret rotation, and auditability. Partner with Information Security teams on investigations, remediation, and removal of systemic vulnerabilities.
  • Strategic Planning: Research emerging middleware technologies and develop roadmaps aligned with DOJ business needs. Participate in enterprise planning efforts and ensure middleware directions support long‑term performance, resilience, and compliance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
