This highly influential role serves as the primary authority on building enclosure engineering, design, consulting, commissioning, investigation, repair, rehabilitation, and industry best practices. As the National Practice Leader , you will drive technical excellence throughout the organization by developing standards, mentoring technical staff, advancing professional development programs, and ensuring consistency in project delivery across all regions. Working closely with the VP National Practice Leader, Area Business Leaders, and technical teams, you will help shape the strategic growth of the practice while maintaining Lerch Bates' reputation as a trusted leader in building enclosure consulting. This position is ideal for a recognized building enclosure expert who is passionate about advancing the profession, mentoring technical teams, developing innovative solutions, and influencing the future of building science consulting on a national scale. What You’ll Do: The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed in this position. Technical Leadership & Practice Development Serve as the national subject matter expert for building enclosure engineering, design, consulting, commissioning, and rehabilitation services. Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and oversight to consultants, engineers, architects, and project teams throughout the organization. Establish, maintain, and continuously improve technical standards, design methodologies, quality procedures, and best practices. Identify areas of technical inconsistency or improvement and develop solutions, training programs, and implementation strategies. Conduct technical quality control reviews of projects, reports, and deliverables across the practice. Champion technical excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement throughout the organization. Strategic Leadership & Business Growth Partner with executive leadership to develop and execute short-term and long-term growth strategies for the Building Enclosure practice. Support strategic planning activities related to staffing, resource allocation, market expansion, service offerings, and operational performance. Monitor practice performance related to quality, productivity, utilization, and financial results. Identify emerging industry trends, technologies, and market opportunities that support future growth. Participate in complex, multidisciplinary pursuits and strategic business development initiatives. Support revenue growth through client relationships, technical leadership, thought leadership, and market visibility. Learning, Development & Mentorship Develop and implement technical training programs, continuing education opportunities, and career development pathways. Partner with Learning & Development teams to cultivate a culture of continuous learning and professional growth. Facilitate technical workshops, training sessions, seminars, and knowledge-sharing initiatives. Mentor consultants, project managers, engineers, architects, and future technical leaders. Foster a growth-minded culture that encourages collaboration, innovation, and technical development. Technical Standards & Quality Management Develop and maintain technical standards, work instructions, design guides, templates, and quality assurance procedures. Ensure technical staff have access to current industry standards, codes, technologies, and best practices. Maintain and manage technical intellectual property, including technical resources, design content, and proprietary methodologies. Support standardization efforts across regions to promote consistency and quality throughout project delivery. Monitor industry developments and implement updates to technical processes and standards as appropriate. Industry Leadership & Client Engagement Serve as a company representative with industry organizations, regulatory agencies, committees, and professional associations. Publish technical papers, participate in industry research, and present at conferences, seminars, and professional events. Build and maintain relationships with clients, industry leaders, partners, and stakeholders. Support key client engagements and complex projects requiring advanced technical expertise. Act as a trusted advisor on building enclosure challenges involving new construction, existing buildings, rehabilitation, restoration, and commissioning projects. Project & Operational Support Maintain involvement in select projects, serving as a technical resource and advisor on complex building enclosure assignments. Provide oversight related to project scope, technical approach, quality, execution, and deliverables. Support staffing, hiring, onboarding, performance management, and succession planning activities. Maintain technical certification and licensure records and recommend future certification needs across the practice. Contribute to operational initiatives that improve efficiency, quality, and overall business performance. What You’ll Bring: Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, Building Science, or a related discipline. Professional licensure such as PE, RA/AIA, RBEC, RRC, REWC, RWC, CBECxP , or other relevant industry credential. 12+ years of experience in building enclosure consulting, engineering, architecture, construction, building science, or a related discipline. Extensive expertise in building enclosure systems, including roofing, waterproofing, facades, fenestration, and air/water/thermal/vapor control systems. Demonstrated success leading technical teams, mentoring professionals, and driving organizational excellence. Strong understanding of building enclosure design, investigation, testing, commissioning, rehabilitation, and construction practices. Proven ability to develop technical standards, training programs, and quality management processes. Experience supporting business growth, strategic planning, and multidisciplinary consulting initiatives. Excellent technical writing, presentation, and communication skills. Strong interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to influence, motivate, and develop high-performing teams. Advanced critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities. Ability to balance strategic leadership responsibilities with technical project involvement. Proficiency with Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Revit, BIM360, Microsoft Office, and other building enclosure-related software tools. Active involvement in industry organizations such as IIBEC, AIA, ASCE, CSI, or similar professional associations. Passion for teaching, mentoring, and advancing the building enclosure profession. Ability to travel as needed to support technical leadership, client engagement, business development, and team development activities nationwide. Preferred Qualifications Professional Engineer (PE) or Registered Architect (RA/AIA) license. Recognized industry thought leadership through publications, presentations, committee involvement, or technical contributions. Experience leading national or multi-regional technical consulting teams. Adult learning, training, or instructional development experience. Expertise spanning both new construction enclosure consulting and existing building repair, rehabilitation, and restoration projects. Why Work with Lerch Bates? Regular travel to project sites is required and may include commercial buildings, occupied facilities, active construction sites, industrial locations, rooftops, and other environments where building evaluations, testing, or construction observations are performed. Work may occur indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. Physical Demands: This position requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb stairs and ladders, and navigate active construction sites and existing buildings. Frequent use of computers, keyboards, measuring equipment, and handheld devices is required. Employees must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety glasses, high-visibility clothing, gloves, safety footwear, hearing protection, and fall protection when applicable. Travel by automobile and occasional air travel may be required. Mental Demands: This position requires strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills. Employees must be able to interpret construction documents, building codes, technical specifications, engineering data, and field observations while exercising sound professional judgment. The role requires managing multiple projects, balancing competing priorities, meeting deadlines, and adapting to changing project conditions. Effective written and verbal communication, technical report writing, client presentations, collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, and attention to detail are essential. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment background check and drug test. The drug test includes screening for marijuana, regardless of state or local laws permitting its use.
