The Opportunity Position: Nuclear Fire Protection Engineer Employment Type: Full-Time Employment Level: Mid-Career Location: Remote (U.S.) / Hybrid Available Near Kinectrics AES Offices Department: Design Engineering Reports to: Engineering Supervisor We are seeking a highly qualified Nuclear Fire Protection Engineer to support the design, licensing, analysis, and implementation of fire protection upgrades for nuclear facilities. The successful candidate will work closely with design engineering teams, site fire protection personnel, operations, licensing, and emergency preparedness stakeholders to ensure compliant and successful plant modifications and upgrades. This position is responsible for ensuring fire protection systems, structures, processes, and procedures meet applicable nuclear safety, regulatory, and industry requirements. Based on qualifications and project needs, the successful candidate may also provide broader design and program engineering support. SME support for modifications that upgrade or replace fire protection features, including detection and alarm systems, suppression systems, fire barriers, fire doors, fire dampers, fire pumps, water supplies, and passive fire protection systems. Support compliance with applicable nuclear regulatory requirements, fire protection codes, standards, and industry guidance. Interpret and apply requirements from organizations such as the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and other applicable regulatory and consensus standards. Perform or support deterministic and risk-informed fire protection analyses. Evaluate the impact of fire hazards on nuclear safety-related, non-safety-related and risk-significant systems, structures, and components. Develop technical reports, calculations, engineering evaluations, procedures, specifications, and licensing documentation. Support fire protection system design, modifications, testing, inspection, and maintenance activities. Participate in design reviews, configuration management activities, and plant modification projects. Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to resolve complex technical issues. W hat You Need to Succeed Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a related engineering discipline. 5+ years of engineering experience in nuclear, fire protection, power generation, or another highly regulated industry. Working knowledge of fire protection engineering principles, fire detection and suppression systems, fire barriers, and fire risk assessment methodologies. Familiarity with applicable NRC regulations, NFPA standards, and nuclear industry fire protection requirements. Strong analytical, technical writing, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a collaborative engineering environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Preferred Qualifications Experience supporting commercial nuclear power plants or DOE nuclear facilities. Knowledge of NRC fire protection programs, licensing basis requirements, NFPA 805, and Appendix R compliance. Experience performing deterministic or risk-informed fire protection analyses. Familiarity with Fire PRA, probabilistic risk assessment methodologies, or fire modeling software. Experience supporting plant modifications, design change packages, and regulatory interactions. Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure. Employees located near a Kinectrics AES office may have the option to work in a hybrid work environment.
