Role Overview
The Online Community Manager will be responsible for building, managing, and growing TEDxMaitama's online community across social media platforms, messaging channels, and digital community spaces.
The successful candidate will create meaningful conversations, nurture relationships with community members, encourage participation in TEDxMaitama activities, and transform passive followers into an active and engaged community.
This role requires someone who understands digital communities, social media culture, storytelling, audience engagement, and the ability to build genuine relationships online.
Key Responsibilities
1. Community Management
- Manage TEDxMaitama's online communities across platforms such as WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, X, and other relevant channels.
- Welcome, onboard, and engage new community members.
- Create an inclusive, respectful, and intellectually stimulating online environment.
- Respond to comments, questions, messages, and community enquiries promptly.
- Identify and nurture highly engaged community members and potential ambassadors.
- Encourage members to share ideas, experiences, opportunities, and relevant resources.
2. Community Growth
- Develop strategies to grow TEDxMaitama's online community organically.
- Drive membership and engagement around TEDxMaitama conferences, salons, workshops, and other programs.
- Develop community referral and ambassador initiatives.
- Identify relevant online communities, networks, and partnerships that can expand TEDxMaitama's reach.
- Track community growth and recommend strategies for improving acquisition and retention.
3. Content & Engagement
- Develop and execute weekly community engagement calendars.
- Create polls, questions, discussion prompts, challenges, quizzes, and other interactive content.
- Repurpose TEDxMaitama talks, speaker insights, event highlights, and thought leadership content into community conversations.
- Encourage meaningful discussions around TEDxMaitama themes and ideas.
- Work closely with the Content, Social Media, Newsletter, and Marketing teams to maintain consistent messaging.
4. Event Engagement
- Build excitement and engagement before TEDxMaitama events.
- Coordinate online conversations and activities leading up to conferences and events.
- Keep attendees and community members informed about event updates, speakers, schedules, and opportunities.
- Facilitate digital engagement during and after events.
- Develop post-event conversations that extend the life of TEDxMaitama content beyond the event itself.
- Encourage attendees to share experiences, photos, videos, and key takeaways.
5. Community Advocacy & Ambassadors
- Identify highly engaged community members who can become TEDxMaitama ambassadors.
- Develop and manage a community ambassador program.
- Recognize and celebrate active contributors.
- Build relationships with founders, professionals, students, creatives, entrepreneurs, and other relevant communities.
- Encourage community members to become advocates for TEDxMaitama's mission and programs.
6. Moderation
- Monitor community conversations and ensure compliance with TEDxMaitama's community guidelines.
- Address spam, inappropriate content, harassment, misinformation, and disruptive behaviour.
- Escalate sensitive issues to the appropriate member of the TEDxMaitama leadership team.
- Maintain a professional and welcoming tone across all community platforms.
7. Analytics & Reporting
- Track community growth, engagement, retention, and activity levels.
- Monitor key metrics across community platforms.
- Prepare monthly community performance reports.
- Identify trends, frequently discussed topics, member interests, and engagement opportunities.
- Use data and community feedback to improve engagement strategies.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
The Online Community Manager will be evaluated based on:
- Growth in online community membership.
- Monthly active community members.
- Engagement and participation rates.
- Comments, conversations, shares, and user-generated content.
- Community retention and member activity.
- Event registrations and participation generated through community channels.
- Growth of TEDxMaitama's ambassador network.
- Response time to community enquiries.
- Quality and consistency of community engagement.
- Number of strategic community partnerships developed.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Business, Media, Public Relations, or a related field is an advantage.
- 2–4 years of experience in community management, social media management, digital marketing, communications, or a related role.
- Demonstrated experience managing online communities or social media audiences.
- Strong understanding of platforms such as WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and X.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building abilities.
- Excellent understanding of digital culture and online audience behaviour.
- Ability to create engaging conversation-driven content.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Skills
- Experience working with conferences, events, nonprofits, media organizations, startups, or purpose-driven organizations.
- Experience managing WhatsApp communities and/or large digital communities.
- Familiarity with social media analytics and community management tools.
- Basic graphic design or content creation skills.
- Experience with platforms such as Meta Business Suite, LinkedIn, Canva, Buffer, Hootsuite, or similar tools.
- Understanding of African innovation, entrepreneurship, technology, business, leadership, and social impact ecosystems.
- Experience developing ambassador or volunteer programs.
