OpenStack Developer – Cinder & Manila (Python)

TalentLeader Human Resources Consultancy is looking for an experienced OpenStack Developer on behalf of our client to contribute to the development and evolution of critical cloud infrastructure components, with a particular focus on Cinder (Block Storage) and Manila (Shared File Systems).

This is a hands-on software development role for an engineer who actively develops OpenStack components, fixes bugs, contributes code, and ideally participates in upstream open-source development.

Please note: This is not an OpenStack administration or DevOps role. Candidates must have demonstrable software development experience with Cinder and/or Manila.

Position Details

• Workload: Full-time (40 hours per week)

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, maintain, and enhance OpenStack components, particularly Cinder and/or Manila.
• Write production-quality Python code to improve functionality, scalability, performance, and maintainability.
• Identify and fix software defects, troubleshoot complex technical issues, and implement improvements in production environments.
• Contribute code changes to upstream OpenStack projects and related open-source tools and services.
• Develop and maintain unit, functional, and integration tests to ensure software quality and reliability.
• Develop and deploy cloud-native services on Kubernetes, including creating and maintaining Helm charts.
• Contribute to CRD and operator development where required.
• Collaborate with infrastructure teams to integrate OpenStack components with technologies such as NetApp and KVM.
• Monitor and improve system observability using logs, metrics, and alerting solutions such as Prometheus and Perses.
• Support critical production systems through troubleshooting and participate in on-call rotations when required.
• Maintain clear technical documentation and follow established engineering standards.
• Participate in agile development activities, including sprint planning, code reviews, and backlog refinement.
• Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to deliver highly available, resilient, and scalable cloud infrastructure solutions.

Required Qualifications & Technical Skills:

OpenStack Development

• Strong, demonstrable hands-on development experience with OpenStack Cinder and/or Manila.
• Experience writing code, fixing bugs, implementing features, and contributing to the development of OpenStack components.
• Understanding of OpenStack architecture and the relevant storage services.
• Upstream open-source contributions are highly desirable.

Python Development

• At least 5 years of professional software development experience.
• At least 3 years of strong Python development experience.
• Solid knowledge of software design principles, design patterns, asynchronous I/O, packaging, and maintainable code practices.
• Experience developing, testing, and maintaining production-grade software.

Kubernetes & Cloud Infrastructure

• Solid, hands-on experience with Kubernetes.
• Experience deploying applications and services to Kubernetes and authoring Helm charts.
• Experience with NetApp and/or KVM is required.
• Experience working with large-scale infrastructure or cloud-native environments.
• Understanding of distributed systems, service-oriented architectures, and highly available infrastructure.

Development Tooling & Delivery

• Proficiency with Git, GitHub, or comparable version control platforms.
• Understanding of CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and software delivery workflows.
• Ability to participate in code reviews and collaborative software development processes.

Nice-to-Have Skills

• Demonstrable contributions to OpenStack or other open-source projects.
• Experience with observability platforms and tools, particularly Prometheus and Perses.
• Familiarity with Go for infrastructure-related tooling.
• Exposure to public cloud platforms such as AWS or Microsoft Azure.
• Experience with Kubernetes operators and Custom Resource Definitions (CRDs).

Important Candidate Requirement

This position is specifically for an active software developer working on OpenStack Cinder and/or Manila.

Candidates whose experience is primarily focused on OpenStack administration, infrastructure operations, configuration, or DevOps—without hands-on development of Cinder/Manila—will not be considered suitable for this role.
