Patient Billing Customer Service Representative (Remote)

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and customer-focused Patient Billing Customer Service Representative to support revenue cycle operations during and following a major Epic system transition. This role serves as a primary point of contact for patients, insurance carriers, vendors, and third-party partners regarding billing inquiries, account research, insurance updates, and payment-related questions.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of healthcare revenue cycle processes, patient billing, insurance requirements, and Epic on the business office side. Success in this role requires exceptional communication skills, strong attention to detail, the ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and a commitment to delivering compassionate service to patients, including a large Medicare population.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for patient billing and account-related inquiries.
  • Respond to billing questions received via phone, email, voicemail, fax, and written correspondence.
  • Handle a high volume of inbound calls while providing outstanding customer service.
  • Research patient accounts and resolve first-level billing disputes.
  • Escalate and route complex issues to appropriate departments when necessary.
  • Enter, verify, and update insurance information accurately and efficiently.
  • Assist patients with understanding bills, insurance coverage, deductibles, Explanation of Benefits (EOBs), Medicare, and payment responsibilities.
  • Respond to insurance carrier, vendor, and third-party inquiries regarding account status and billing matters.
  • Support workflow cleanup initiatives and Epic transition-related activities.
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA and organizational policies when handling confidential patient and financial information.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure timely issue resolution and positive patient experiences.
  • Meet productivity, quality, and response-time expectations while working independently.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of healthcare customer service experience focused on patient billing or revenue cycle operations.
  • Minimum of 3 years of Epic experience, specifically within the business office, patient accounting, or revenue cycle environment.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare billing processes, including:
    • Patient billing
    • Insurance verification
    • Deductibles
    • Explanation of Benefits (EOBs)
    • Medicare
    • Revenue cycle operations
  • Experience researching accounts and resolving billing inquiries.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly and compassionately.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Comfortable handling confidential patient and financial information.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting organizations through Epic implementations or system transitions.
  • Experience working with patient financial services teams.
  • Strong understanding of Medicare populations and community-based healthcare organizations.
  • Previous experience handling complex billing disputes and insurance-related inquiries.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Jacksonville, FL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
