Pediatric Cardiologist (Clinical & Echocardiography) - Volunteer Medical Specialist The Telemedicine Program provides secure solutions designed to support the needs of healthcare professionals across MSF, while building a community of knowledge-sharing and clinical collaboration. Department: Telemedicine Program – Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Medical Specialty: Pediatric Cardiologist (Clinical & Echocardiography) Position Status: Volunteer Location: Remote Only Time Commitment: up to 3 hours per week Position Overview As a Pediatric Cardiologist Volunteer Medical Specialist with MSF’s Telemedicine Program, you will provide remote medical and clinical support to MSF’s global medical teams on a case-by-case basis. Pediatric Cardiologist Specialists review and respond to patient cases assigned to them via our secure Telemedicine Platform. Support is provided asynchronously (not in real time), offering maximum flexibility for volunteers. Why This Role Matters In the remote settings where MSF operates, children account for most of our consultations. Yet, in these isolated regions, access to pediatricians or cardiologists, let alone Pediatric Cardiologists as well as specialized imaging is often unavailable. While some sites have a general pediatrician or basic‑level POCUS training and capacity, many do not, and almost none have advanced POCUS or ultrasound skills. A Pediatric Cardiologist is not available in any of our sites and often not even at tertiary referral sites. As a result, expert support is often required to ensure accurate assessment and management of cases. By volunteering with your expertise, you provide essential and critical support to frontline clinicians, enabling more accurate clinical decisions and better patient outcomes. Your contribution bridges the gap in care, bringing high-quality medical and imaging support to the world's most isolated communities. About the Telemedicine Program The MSF Telemedicine Program helps remove geographic barriers to healthcare by providing secure digital solutions for MSF’s medical teams worldwide. These tools enable clinical collaboration, improve access to specialized expertise, and support more equitable, high-quality patient care. Led by MSF Canada since 2009, the Telemedicine Program includes a global network of more than 200 volunteer specialists including physicians, surgeons, nurses, psychologists, nutritionists, midwives, physiotherapists, and more who provide timely, case-based support to MSF’s frontline teams. We welcome applications from Pediatric Cardiologists to join our global network of Volunteer Medical Specialists. Please note that applications are reviewed and selected based on the needs of our medical teams. Key Responsibilities Review pediatric cardiac patient cases assigned to you on the Telemedicine Platform and provide timely medical or clinical advice (within 24 hours). Provide detailed reviews and expert interpretations of ultrasound images submitted by field clinicians and assist in clinical diagnosis. Imaging includes basic cardiac views with and without color Doppler and sweeps through the heart. Teams cannot provide full cardiac scans, Suprasternal notch, PW or CW imaging. Assist field teams in narrowing complex differentials by integrating Ultrasound findings with available clinical data and patient history (most probable cause to least probable). Deliver high-level clinical decision support and careful advice on appropriate treatment plans, especially adapting to the available resources and management options in the given location. To the best available knowledge, provide information on the natural evolution of the disease and therapeutic options. Together with other specialist counsel and guide the field teams on conservative management and holistic care, including long term medications, milestones and palliative care if no curative option is available for the patient. Ensure all advice aligns with MSF guidelines and is appropriate for low-resource settings. Provide constructive feedback on image acquisition techniques to help field clinicians improve the diagnostic quality of their scans. Provide ongoing follow-up on assigned cases until they are resolved. Collaborate with other Medical Specialists assigned to the case and share specialized expertise to contribute to a global community of medical knowledge. Ensure all telemedicine consultations adhere to strict patient data privacy standards and ethical guidelines regarding digital medical records. Qualifications Pediatric Cardiologist with demonstrated proficiency in cardiac ultrasound acquired during residency or advanced clinical training. Minimum 4 years of post-qualification work experience, including echocardiography in daily clinical practice. Clinical use or teaching of cardiac ultrasound within the past calendar year Active registration and certification with your professional regulatory body. Comfortable using technology and navigating online platforms. Fluency in English or French required (written and spoken); fluency in multiple languages is highly desirable. Previous experience in Global Health, prior to MSF/humanitarian work, or work in low-resource settings, is highly desirable Training in tropical medicine is an asset. Volunteer Expectations & Onboarding 2–3 hours per week with flexible scheduling based on volunteer availability. Fully remote and support can be provided from anywhere with a reliable internet connection. Successful candidates will sign a Volunteer Agreement (including data privacy, non-disclosure, and medical liability clauses). Onboarding includes an overview of the Telemedicine Program and platform training (1.5 hours, self-paced). If requested, be prepared to provide three professional references (references will only be contacted with your permission). Next Steps Confirm your eligibility by reviewing the qualifications listed above. Submit your application, highlighting your relevant experience, and answer a few questions about your motivation to volunteer with the Telemedicine Program. Complete a screening questionnaire to help us better understand your experience and professional background. Our Telemedicine Recruitment Team will review your application and be in touch to guide you through next steps if your profile aligns with current program needs.
