PhD position Advanced Monitoring Methodologies for Atmospheric Pollutants and Citizen Science Integration

This PhD is embedded in the Horizon Europe project VISONAIR that is coordinated by VITO. The PhD-research focuses on the development, optimization, and application of advanced laboratory methodologies for the characterization of atmospheric particulate matter and associated pollutants. The work will contribute to improved understanding of ultrafine particles, toxic components, and source related signatures in ambient air samples, supporting air quality assessment and source apportionment activities within the broader project framework. The research will primarily involve practical laboratory work and analytical method development. Atmospheric samples collected by project partners through drone-based monitoring systems, passive samplers, portable devices, and citizen science sensor networks will be analyzed using state-of-the-art instrumentation available at VITO and collaborating institutions. External partners will provide complementary expertise in field measurements, sensor deployment, data integration, and modelling activities, allowing the PhD candidate to fully specialize in laboratory based analytical research. A central objective of the PhD is the comprehensive characterization of ultrafine atmospheric particles with respect to their mass and number concentration, size distribution, morphology, and chemical composition. Correlative microscopy techniques will be employed for the identification and characterization of micro- and nanoplastic particles, while single-particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (sp-ICP-MS) will be used to detect and characterize metal-containing particles. The mass concentration and chemical composition of plastics, black carbon, and tire and road wear particles (TRWPs) will be quantified using pyrolysis gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS). The PhD will further evaluate and optimize analytical workflows, sample preparation procedures, and quality assurance protocols for atmospheric particle analysis. Comparative assessment of passive and active sampling approaches will support the harmonization of methodologies across the consortium. Overall, this research will strengthen laboratory capabilities for advanced atmospheric pollutant characterization and deliver scientifically robust analytical methodologies to support air quality management and environmental health studies. PhD supervision The research will be conducted primarily at VITO in close collaboration with Antwerp University . The successful candidate will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Adrian Covaci (UAntwerp) and co-promoted by Prof. Dr. Stefan Voorspoels (VITO) and Dr. Milica Velimirovic (VITO; project manager and contact person for enquiries).
