This role offers the opportunity to join a commercial and industrial mechanical and electrical design team based in the greater Indianapolis area, focusing on HVAC, plumbing, electrical, refrigeration, industrial piping, building automation, and sheet metal installation and services. As a Plumbing Designer, you will contribute to a wide range of projects across the Midwest and the United States, including industrial facilities, warehouses and tenant improvements, higher education buildings, K12 schools, hotels, office buildings, and large food service buildings. You will take ownership of plumbing design projects from concept through construction, working in a collaborative, design/build environment that supports professional growth, flexible work arrangements, and strong long-term stability.

Responsibilities
  • Develop comprehensive plumbing system construction documents, including drawings and specifications, for commercial, institutional, and industrial projects.
  • Size domestic water, sanitary, and storm systems and associated piping to meet project requirements and applicable codes.
  • Size compressed air and gas systems, including natural gas and medical gas, ensuring appropriate capacity and safety.
  • Select plumbing fixtures and equipment that align with project performance requirements and design standards.
  • Perform field surveys to support proposals and assist in developing accurate and competitive project proposals.
  • Represent the design discipline at client meetings, clearly communicating technical concepts and design intent.
  • Participate in project review meetings, providing input on design solutions, constructability, and coordination with other disciplines.
  • Develop and adjust project approaches, and plan and direct detailed phases of plumbing design work throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Complete and check engineering reports and calculations to validate system performance and compliance.
  • Create detailed drawings and specifications for plumbing systems using Revit and related tools.
  • Perform construction administration activities, including responding to field questions, reviewing submittals, and supporting installation and commissioning.
  • Manage discipline-specific activities, resolving technical matters that arise during design and construction.
  • Deliver fully coordinated plumbing designs suitable for fabrication and construction, including flow and load calculations, equipment selection, base file setup, model creation, system sizing and routing, and final deliverables.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 5 years of plumbing design experience in commercial or industrial environments.
  • Ability to design independently, including performing flow and load calculations, selecting equipment, establishing design base files, creating models, sizing and routing systems, and delivering complete designs for fabrication and construction.
  • Proficiency with Revit, including Revit MEP, for creating plumbing models and construction documents.
  • Strong knowledge of final deliverable expectations, including engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Technical aptitude to manage discipline-specific activities and ensure high-quality design outcomes.
  • Ability to effectively resolve technical issues and design challenges within the plumbing discipline.
  • Demonstrated understanding of project time management, including planning work, meeting deadlines, and supporting overall project schedules.
  • Solid understanding of the trades final product and how design decisions impact construction and system performance.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with both design/build and plan-spec project environments is highly valued.
  • Ability to step into a lead role, managing projects with clients and internal teams and serving as a primary point of contact for plumbing design.
  • Capability to provide mentorship and guidance to junior team members, supporting their technical development and project contributions.
Work Environment

The role is based in a modern office located in Fishers, Indiana, near major highways and close to downtown amenities. The workspace consists of standard office areas with cubicles and private offices, designed to support collaboration and communication. The team works closely with other disciplines, including electrical, BIM, and construction management, fostering a highly collaborative design/build environment where coordination is handled in-house rather than through multiple external parties. Typical hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with understood flexibility around start times and hybrid work options. After an initial period of approximately 60 days, team members commonly work a mix of in-office and remote days, often 23 days in the office per week, while maintaining a full-time schedule of roughly 4045 hours per week. The company offers medical, dental, and vision insurance; paid vacation with up to three weeks of PTO based on industry experience; six paid holidays; life insurance; short-term and long-term disability insurance; a 401(k) with a generous company match; and a company phone and laptop. The culture emphasizes stability, professional growth within a design/build framework, competitive compensation with the potential for higher bonuses, and a collaborative environment that reduces many of the coordination headaches typical of consulting firms.
