Quick Summary

You'll lead policy forms drafting and coverage interpretation for all lines of business. Determine what forms each new state and product needs, help draft them from statute to filing-ready package, and be the person Claims, Product, and Underwriting turn to on coverage and complex forms questions. 5+ years of forms drafting or coverage experience required; JD strongly preferred. Level and pay are based on experience.

Who We Are

Kin makes life simpler, more affordable, and better for homeowners — especially in the places where climate risks, rising costs, and outdated systems make it hardest. We start with smarter homeowners insurance and expand to everything homeowners need to thrive.

Using data, technology, and thoughtful human support, we're building products that are clear, fair, and help homeowners feel confident — so homeowners aren't left behind when they need help most.

Founded in 2016, Kin is a remote-first employer with Kinfolk across more than 35 states. We serve customers in 14 states (and counting). Our disciplined growth, strong customer satisfaction, and focus on long-term sustainability fosters outstanding growth, attracts marquee investors, and earns recognition and accolades, including:

  • Built In Chicago's Best Places to Work, Midsize Companies (2021-2026)

  • Forbes' America's Best Startup Employers (2026)

  • Inc. 5000 Fastest-Growing Private Companies

  • Forbes' Fintech 50 (2023-2026)

  • Great Places to Work Certified (2024-2026)

Most importantly, we're building Kin to be a place where people do meaningful work with real impact — for our customers, our communities, and each other. To learn more about how we work and what we're building, visit kin.com.

The Opportunity

You’ll join the Forms team within Legal & Compliance as the primary drafting owner for policy forms and coverage strategy across all of Kin’s current and future lines of business. Kin is entering new states and launching new products now, and that pace will continue through 2027 and beyond. A new state can’t open until its full form set is drafted, which puts this role on the critical path for growth. You’ll take on the most complex state packages while partnering closely with specialists in personal auto and property. You’ll also be the go-to advisor to the business on what our forms say and mean, and you’ll set the drafting standards and reusable templates the rest of the team builds from.

Filing, version control, and system implementation sit with dedicated teammates, so your time goes to research, drafting, coverage guidance, and raising the team's output quality.

Your Responsibilities

Forms drafting

  • Determine which forms each new state, product, or coverage change requires, including base policies, endorsements, state amendatory endorsements, selection and rejection forms, and required notices, and build the forms plan before drafting begins.

  • Lead and help draft complete new state and product forms packages across all of Kin’s lines of business, ready for filing.

  • Tackle the most complex new-state packages, including states with extensive or ambiguous statutory requirements, and develop the drafting approach for the team.

  • Research state statutes and regulations directly and translate them into compliant, clear policy wording.

  • Build and maintain the countrywide base forms and reusable state kits for every line of business. For personal auto, that includes UM and UIM, PIP, selection and rejection forms, and state notices. For property, it includes homeowners, manufactured home, condo, and flood, including surplus lines notices where applicable.

  • Maintain and update forms packages across all lines, revising them in response to new statutes, regulations, and DOI bulletins, and to product enhancements and coverage changes.

  • Partner with the personal auto and property specialists to set drafting priorities and coordinate work across lines, so no launch depends on a single person.

Coverage interpretation and review

  • Serve as the coverage expert for Claims, Product, Underwriting, Sales, and Customer Experience, answering coverage interpretation and complex forms questions across all lines.

  • Reconcile discrepancies between forms, manual rules, rates, and underwriting guidelines.

  • Perform first-pass review of forms drafted within the Forms team, and escalate novel state law questions to Senior Insurance Counsel.

  • Help shape coverage structures for new products, and identify risks in proposed product designs or coverage changes before they reach the drafting stage.

  • Monitor state legislative, regulatory, and ISO/AAIS activity for impact on Kin’s forms and products.

  • Review product bulletins and marketing materials to make sure they match actual coverage provisions.

Regulatory

  • Draft responses to Department of Insurance objections on forms and advocate for Kin’s position on form wording with regulators.

  • Support forms-related questions arising during DOI audits and market conduct exams.

Standards, training, and tools

  • Establish drafting standards and reusable language that make each new state package faster to produce than the last.

  • Design and deliver internal training on Kin’s policy forms, coverage interpretation, and state regulatory expectations.

  • Use and evaluate Kin’s AI-assisted research and drafting tools, including tools for competitor research, automated formatting, and statutory research. Review AI-generated output for accuracy and compliance, and help set guardrails for where AI can be relied on and where human judgment is required.

Success in This Role

In your first 6–12 months at Kin, success is less about checking boxes and more about the impact you create. By the end of your first year, you should feel confident in your role, trusted as an owner, and proud of the progress you’ve helped make.

  • Multiple complete state and product forms packages across Kin’s lines of business have been developed and delivered for filing.

  • You are the go-to subject matter expert on Kin’s policy forms across all lines of business.

  • Most forms now reach Senior Insurance Counsel only for final sign-off or novel state law questions.

  • Internal partners (Claims, Product, Underwriting, Sales, and Customer Experience) regularly come to you for coverage interpretation guidance, reducing escalations to Senior Insurance Counsel.

  • Drafting standards and reusable templates you created are actively used by the team.

  • Filing deadlines are met across lines even when a team member is out, because drafting knowledge and templates are shared across the team.

What You'll Bring

  • 5+ years of policy form drafting experience, or a combination of policy form drafting and coverage interpretation, such as product management, product compliance, claims litigation, or coverage counsel experience

  • Experience deciding what forms a new state or product requires and drafting personal lines policy forms for multiple states

  • Experience reading state insurance statutes and regulations directly and converting requirements into policy language

  • Experience responding to regulator objections and inquiries on form filings and negotiating approvals

  • Experience serving as a coverage expert for underwriting, claims, and sales teams

  • Working knowledge of how forms interact with manual rules, rates, and underwriting guidelines

  • Track record of developing complete forms packages independently, from initial research to filing-ready

  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex or ambiguous statutory requirements with minimal guidance

Education

A Juris Doctor (JD) is strongly preferred. Candidates without a JD who bring equivalent depth in policy forms drafting and coverage interpretation are encouraged to apply and will be fully considered.

Bonus if you have

  • Experience with Kin's lines of business: personal auto (UM and UIM, PIP, selection and rejection forms, state notices) or property (homeowners, condo, manufactured home, flood, or surplus lines notices)

  • Experience providing coverage opinions or interpreting and applying policy language to claims scenarios

  • Active bar admission in any U.S. state

Level and Compensation

This role will be leveled based on the experience, education, and scope each candidate brings. Final title, level, and compensation will be determined by experience.

Compensation range: $80,000 – $150,000 base salary, plus equity. Where you land in this range depends on your experience and the level at which the role is filled.

While our recruiting team uses AI tools for efficiency, resumes are still screened by Kin's in-house recruiters, and candidate evaluations and hiring decisions are made by recruiters and hiring teams. How we work

We don’t just hire for skills. We hire for alignment. Kinfolk bring diverse perspectives, but we’re united by a shared set of values that shape how we work and how we show up for each other and our customers.

Run through walls, together - Every one of us is responsible for creating the culture we want to work in. High performance. Low drama. Always respectful. We assume the best in each other and challenge ideas, not intentions. We show up, work hard, and play to each other's strengths — because that’s how great teams win.

Raise the bar. Drop the ego - Attitudes are contagious. Every one of us is responsible for creating the culture we want to work in. High performance. Low drama. Always respectful. Like professional sports teams, we win by working in sync. We show up, work hard, and play to each other’s strengths.

Act like an owner - We are owners, fully accountable for achieving Kin’s mission. That requires positive, proactive, big-picture thinking well beyond our job descriptions. Ask questions, Take ownership. Do the right thing, even when it‘s hard. Because when Kin thrives, so do you. And so do our customers.

Operate lean. Deliver more - We build efficiency into everything we do. Each dollar we save gets reinvested to deliver more to our customers: better pricing, more products, and new innovations. We work smarter by relentlessly prioritizing and using technology, including AI, to multiply our impact. Lean is about focus, not deprivation. Lean isn't a limitation — it's our competitive advantage.

Keep asking ‘What if?’ - We value curiosity. To make insurance better for our customers, we experiment. We embrace insights. And we base decisions on data rather than assumptions. We see setbacks as opportunities for growth and are always learning and improving. Both individually and as a company.
