We have an opening for a Polymer Enclave Data Architecture and Integration Lead to support direct ink-write (DIW) 3D-printing technologies for NNSA Defense Programs applications. You will lead the development and sustainment of secure, scalable data solutions spanning LLNL development activities and full-scale production at Kansas City National Security Campus. You will coordinate across data owners, software teams, manufacturing and engineering personnel, cybersecurity professionals, and cross-site partners. The role requires expertise in scientific data systems, database technologies, software integration, analytics, and visualization, along with strong communication and leadership skills. This position is in the Computational Engineering Division (CED), within the Engineering Directorate, supporting programmatic Polymer Enclave work for Strategic Deterrence (SD).
Depending on your assignment, this position may offer a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You may have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
In this role, you will
- Design, implement, maintain, and improve data management systems supporting Polymer Enclave and related DIW activities.
- Evaluate secure, scalable storage, database, compute, cloud, and in-house solutions.
- Establish sustainable data practices and develop pipelines for data collection, processing, validation, curation, and storage across teams, data streams, and data modalities.
- Write clean, maintainable, scalable, and secure Python or similar code.
- Assess system cost, performance, scalability, sustainability, and maintainability, and recommend future investments.
- Integrate data and software solutions with Strategic Deterrence workflows, systems, IT requirements, and applicable policies.
- Lead and support data channels and interfaces with KCNSC and other partner sites.
- Collaborate with manufacturing and engineering personnel, provide technical guidance, and communicate progress and recommendations to stakeholders.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.4 level
- Lead the architecture, implementation, and sustainment of complex, enterprise-scale data management systems.
- Manage multiple technically complex efforts while balancing stakeholder priorities and operational needs.
- Develop technical strategies and implementation road maps for master data, database, cloud, and enclave capabilities.
- Lead evaluations of secure cloud and in-house approaches, including cost, risk, performance, and sustainability analyses.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship, resolve complex challenges, and advise management and senior stakeholders on technical direction.
- This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Advanced experience designing, implementing, maintaining, or administering data management systems.
- Experience working directly with customers and stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver technical solutions.
- Ability to independently identify gaps, resolve ambiguities, remove barriers, and drive data-integration efforts to completion.
- Strong proficiency in Python or a similar programming language for development of data processing and analysis workflows.
- Advanced experience applying Large Language Models (LLM) for sustainable code generation, cleaning, testing, and documentation.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills needed to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present and explain technical information, document work, prepare and present successful proposals and high-quality research papers, and provide advice to management.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary and collaborative environment.
Additional qualifications at the SES.4 level
- Expert-level experience designing and implementing databases, data platforms, or distributed data systems.
- Proven ability to translate broadly defined requirements into concrete technical strategies and execution plans. Ability to manage and lead multiple complex efforts.
- Highly advanced experience leading data management, software development, or technical operations teams.
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to present, explain, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.
Qualifications We Desire
- Experience developing APIs, data services, or integration interfaces.
- Experience with AWS or other cloud platforms, particularly in secure or restricted environments.
- Experience evaluating cloud-oriented and in-house architectures for cost, sustainability, performance, and maintainability.
Pay Range
$175,530 - $267,060 Annually
$175,530 - $222,564 Annually at the SES.3 level
$210,630 - $267,060 Annually at the SES.4 level
This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. Pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors, including specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Security Clearance
