What You'll Do
National Philanthropic Trust (NPT) is seeking a Portal Engineer to build and enhance our donor and financial partner web portals. This role is responsible for full-stack web application development using .NET and C# on the backend and modern JavaScript/TypeScript frameworks such as Angular and React on the frontend. The Portal Engineer will contribute to technical design, follow engineering best practices, and deliver solutions that are secure, scalable, and maintainable.
The ideal candidate thrives in collaborative Agile environments and enjoys mentoring entry-level developers. This role works with onshore and offshore developers and partners closely with Product, Architecture, Security, and Cloud Operations to translate business needs into high-quality software, including helping strengthen testing practices as the team matures. As a member of an AI-first engineering team, the Portal Engineer is expected to use AI technologies and tools (e.g., coding assistants, automated code review insights, test generation, and documentation assistants) to accelerate delivery while maintaining strong engineering rigor. The Portal Engineer contributes across the SDLC — including design, implementation, code review, automated testing integrated into CI/CD pipelines, and production support — to deliver reliable portal experiences.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Software Design & Development
- Design and develop web portal applications using C# and .NET 8+ (APIs, services, integrations) and Angular/React (UI, state management, component design).
- Contribute technical recommendations and implementation approaches in partnership with senior engineers and Architecture; document technical decisions and implementation considerations.
- Translate product requirements into user stories, technical designs, and implementation plans; estimate work and manage technical dependencies and risks.
- Operate AI-first: leverage AI technologies/tools to expedite development (e.g., rapid prototyping, code generation, refactoring suggestions, test generation), while validating correctness, security, and maintainability.
- Support consistent and secure use of AI-assisted development tools and workflows by sharing effective practices and helping entry-level developers build proficiency.
- Maintain code quality by following software engineering standards for branching, code reviews, definition of done, and documentation, and by promoting maintainable, testable designs.
- Build and maintain automated tests (unit, integration, and end-to-end) aligned to acceptance criteria and the test strategy established with the Test Strategist, and ensure accessibility requirements (WCAG 2.2 Level AA) are validated as part of delivery.
- Contribute to modernization and continuous improvement through refactoring, performance optimization, and reduction of technical debt in collaboration with senior engineers and Architecture.
- Partner with the Director to surface technical dependencies, risks, and sequencing considerations that inform the portal roadmap, ensuring modernization and technical debt work are represented alongside feature delivery.
Delivery, CI/CD & Production Ownership
- Deliver portal changes hosted in Azure, ensuring features are built, reviewed, tested, and deployed through GitHub-based source control and CI/CD pipelines.
- Integrate automated testing into the CI/CD pipelines (unit testing, integration, and end-to-end), helping build out testing practices and tooling to ensure reliable gating, actionable reporting, and continuous quality feedback.
- Partner with Cloud Operations to maintain observability through Datadog, improve logging/telemetry, and define actionable alerts and service level objectives (SLOs).
- Participate in technical triage of production issues by diagnosing root causes, implementing fixes, communicating status, and recommending preventive improvements.
- Ensure secure and compliant implementation of authentication/authorization (Auth0, SSO, MFA) and data protection controls in partnership with Security and Architecture, and support portal compliance with SOC 2 requirements (e.g., access controls, change management, logging/monitoring evidence).
- Maintain engineering runbooks and deployment documentation in Confluence; participate in the on-call rotation as needed and contribute to post-incident improvements.
Mentoring & Collaboration
- Support entry-level developers through pairing, code reviews, technical guidance, and knowledge sharing; help them strengthen development practices and deliver quality work.
- Share practical guidance on effective use of AI coding assistants, prompt techniques, and AI-assisted testing and documentation.
- Participate in Scrum ceremonies in collaboration with the Scrum Lead, including backlog refinement, sprint planning, and daily coordination; provide estimates and maintain delivery commitments in Jira.
- Collaborate with Product, Architecture, and senior engineers to refine solution approaches, integration patterns, and non-functional requirements for security, performance, reliability, and accessibility.
- Participate in cross-functional technical discussions and clearly communicate engineering quality, feasibility, and maintainability considerations.
- Collaborate with external partners and vendors as applicable and review assigned deliverables for technical quality and adherence to NPT standards.
What You Bring
- At least 3 years of relevant software development experience, including hands-on full-stack development with .NET/C# and Angular or React, experience contributing throughout the SDLC, and experience mentoring or supporting entry-level developers.
- Strong backend development expertise with C# and .NET (Web API, backend services, RESTful APIs, GraphQL, dependency injection, security, enterprise integration patterns, relational data access/ORM).Strong backend development expertise with C# and .NET (Web API, backend services, RESTful APIs, GraphQL, dependency injection, security, enterprise integration patterns, relational data access/ORM)
- Strong frontend development expertise with modern JavaScript/TypeScript and frameworks such as Angular and/or React; experience building accessible, responsive, component-based UIs that support WCAG 2.2 Level AA.
- AI-first mindset with demonstrated ability to leverage AI technologies/tools to expedite development (e.g., coding assistants, rapid prototyping, refactoring, test generation) while applying sound engineering judgment and validation.
- Experience applying AI-assisted development practices and sharing practical guidance with other developers, including secure and responsible use of approved tools.
- Experience with GitHub for source control, CI/CD and Git-based workflows.
- Experience developing, deploying, and supporting cloud-hosted applications in Azure, including Azure App Service and related application services.
- Experience using Terraform to support application deployment and configuration through infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD workflows.
- Experience ensuring cross-browser compatibility and consistent user experiences across modern browsers and devices using technologies such as BrowserStack and Sauce Labs.
- Experience with static code analysis and application security scanning tools (e.g., Snyk, SonarQube, Qualys, Veracode) and addressing findings.
- Proven adherence to secure coding practices, including awareness of the OWASP Top 10 and common web application security risks and mitigations.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills in Agile/Scrum environments, with the ability to translate business needs into clear technical requirements and explain implementation considerations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate (AZ-204).
- Experience designing and securing APIs (OAuth/OIDC) and implementing authentication flows (SSO, MFA).
- Experience implementing customer-facing authentication/authorization with Auth0 or similar solutions.
- Experience with performance tuning and web performance optimization (profiling, caching, Lighthouse/Core Web Vitals).
- Experience with observability and operational excellence practices (dashboards, alerting, SLOs, incident management).
- Prior experience in financial services, nonprofit technology, or donor-facing applications.
- Experience integrating web applications with enterprise platforms, third-party services, and content management systems (CMS).
- Experience with modern end-to-end test automation tools (e.g., Playwright, Cypress) and integrating E2E suites into CI/CD pipelines.
- Hands-on experience with AI coding tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code) and experience evaluating or piloting new AI capabilities for an engineering organization.
