About us

At National Grid, we keep people connected and society moving. But it’s so much more than that. National Grid provides the environment, support, and purpose that enable us to make real impact. As we drive momentum in the energy transition for all, we’re committed to ensuring none of our customers are left in the dark.

So, join us as a Portfolio Analyst and find your superpower.

National Grid is hiring a Portfolio Analyst to join our team in Warwick, with hybrid working. You'll play a key role in connecting regulatory commitments, investment and delivery across our Digital and Operational Technology portfolios, helping leaders see where delivery is moving away from the funded plan.

About The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to sit at the heart of NGET’s Digital and IT portfolio, helping senior leaders understand how our technology investment is performing against our regulatory commitments.

As a Portfolio Analyst, you’ll bring together the bigger picture across our Digital and Operational Technology portfolios, connecting regulatory commitments, investment and delivery into a clear, reliable view of performance.

You’ll play a key role in our annual regulatory reporting cycle, while helping us move towards a stronger quarterly rhythm supported by trusted data and insight. Your analysis will give leaders the evidence they need to understand where delivery is moving away from the funded regulatory plan, identify emerging risks and take action earlier.

This is particularly important in a fast-changing digital environment. Business priorities, technology and delivery will continue to evolve, but our funded RIIO commitments remain fixed across the price control period. You’ll help us navigate that challenge, providing the insight needed to protect our regulatory commitments while allowing delivery to adapt as priorities change.

You’ll own the integrity of this connected portfolio view, making sure the evidence behind it is robust, transparent and trusted. You won’t own the underlying financial or portfolio data itself, but you’ll work closely with the teams that do to turn their information into a powerful picture of investment, delivery and regulatory performance.

What You'll Do

You’ll play a key role in connecting our regulatory commitments, investment and delivery, providing the insight that helps leaders make confident, evidence-based decisions across our Digital and OT portfolios.

Regulatory Reporting Cycles

  • Operate the annual regulatory reporting cycle for Digital and IT, producing allocated tables to submission standard and to deadline.
  • Complete assurance documentation, maintaining verification checks, sign-off evidence and a clear audit trail.
  • Reconcile reported positions to finance control totals and resolve boundary, classification and tagging issues with the relevant owners.
  • Design and establish a quarterly internal reporting rhythm from the annual cycle, reducing end-of-year effort and key person dependency.
  • Support ad-hoc regulatory activity, such as reopeners, with traceable portfolio and cost evidence.

Connected View and Traceability

  • Establish and operate the view linking regulatory commitments, funded investment, delivery and outcomes across the Digital and OT portfolios.
  • Maintain traceability between what was funded and what is being delivered, surfacing gaps and divergence early and objectively, for others to act on.
  • Source portfolio and financial data from the portfolios that own it, holding a documented record of source, ownership and reconciliation rather than recreating or correcting it.
  • Maintain and improve the underlying data product, reporting tooling and automation, for example Power BI and ServiceNow SPM.

Insight and Decision Support

  • Analyse trends, risks and divergence, providing actionable insight and recommendations to portfolio leadership and senior stakeholders.
  • Support option and scenario analysis to inform prioritisation and sequencing within a fixed funding envelope.
  • Operate and develop the funding triage and pipeline process, enabling portfolios to self-triage and supporting recommendations to Digital Guild.
  • Prepare analysis and evidence for governance forums, senior reviews and investment decision points.
  • Communicate insight clearly and concisely to technical, non-technical and senior audiences.

Working Across a Federated Organisation

  • Work with portfolio analysts, portfolio managers, Product Line Directors, Finance and Regulation to obtain reliable data and shared understanding.
  • Operate effectively in a matrix environment, achieving outcomes through credibility and influence rather than formal authority.
  • Agree small, sustainable improvements in how data is captured and maintained at source, in partnership with the teams that own it.
  • Challenge constructively using evidence, and escalate where data or assurance gaps present regulatory risk.

About You

We’re looking for someone who can bring together complex information, spot what matters and turn it into clear insight that supports better decisions. You’ll ideally bring:

  • Experience working in a portfolio, finance or delivery analysis environment, with a strong understanding of how investment and delivery come together.
  • Strong analytical skills, with experience bringing together and reconciling complex data from multiple sources to create a clear and reliable picture.
  • Experience producing high-quality reporting, analysis and insight for senior stakeholders, often working to fixed deadlines where accuracy really matters.
  • A track record of improving or redesigning reporting and analysis processes, rather than simply operating processes that already exist.
  • Strong experience using Power BI, with the ability to create and develop reports and dashboards that bring together complex data and turn it into clear, meaningful insight for senior stakeholders.
  • Confidence using Excel to analyse, reconcile and interrogate complex datasets from multiple sources.
  • Familiarity with portfolio management tools such as ServiceNow SPM, or experience working with similar portfolio and reporting platforms.
  • The confidence to work across different teams, challenge constructively and influence without formal authority.
  • A degree or equivalent experience in a relevant area such as Business, IT, Data, Finance or Engineering.
  • Experience within a regulated, audited or externally assured environment would be a real advantage, particularly within utilities or infrastructure.
  • An understanding of economic regulation and how investment and delivery connect to regulatory commitments would be beneficial.
  • Qualifications such as P3O, PRINCE2 or Agile Project Management would be advantageous, but aren’t essential.

What You'll Get

  • Competitive Salary: circa £50,000 – £58,000 per annum (based on capability and experience)

Additional benefits:

  • 26 days’ annual leave, plus 8 statutory bank holidays, with the option to buy additional holiday days and swap up to 3 bank holidays to better suit your personal needs.
  • A competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution, up to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
  • You will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance.
  • Flexible benefits including a cycle scheme, share incentive plan, and technology schemes.
  • Access to benefits such as a digital GP service for 24/7 GP video consultations and NHS repeat prescriptions, plus a wellbeing app to support your health and fitness.
  • Access to Work + Family Space, providing support and resources for work and family life, including paid emergency childcare and eldercare.
